It's nearly impossible to get rid of new fat cells once they've been created. As far as I know anyway.

Shrink? Yes.

So how do ppl bulk, adding fat and then diet down to very lean physiques if the fat cells remain?

They shrink or 'empty' (these release their stored triglycerides).

That's the thing you have to be careful with when bulking. It used to be thought that fat cell number only increases in childhood years and during pregnancy. But that's not true. If the current crop of fat cells hit a certain size, there are hormones released that send the message, even in adulthood, to create new fat cells from preadipocytes.

That obviously is a not-so-hot thing, since more fat cells is obviously not a great thing when it comes to wanting to stay lean. Now you have even more fat cells that can get filled up.

so how do you know when bulking that you arent adding new fat cells or refilling existing ones?

Well, you don't.

You are for sure refilling current fat cells if you add fat on a bulk (and as we know some fat gain is to be expected).

I would think that provided you don't blow past a previous high bodyfat percentage, that you'll be operating with the number of fat cells you have already.

I thought you did not create new fat cells but the existing ones got larger and then split. Or am I totally misinformed here?

See post #4, where I already commented on that.

Preadipocytes are dormant cells that are triggered into active cells by hormones like Angiotensin II, etc..

And regardless if a new fat cell is created or a current one splits into two - what's the difference? You have new fat cells.

OOPs. That is what I get for reading too fast.

Oh, no difference I just always thought you could not make new ones after a certain point but I am wrong. Going to go read up on that.

I've heard that resveratrol can make fat cells die.. it's why we've got a resveratrol-based fat burner. The fun part is that we even sold another product that's more geared to sports' performance and longevity to someone who said he was feeling slightly better but noticed he got leaner while eating the same amt of food :)

Actually I was wrong, I thought it killed fat cells, but resveratrol only shrinks them. And shrinks them well.

Sirt1 promotes fat mobilization in white adipocytes by repressing PPAR-gamma (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&list_uids=15175761)

Ileen, I'd not worry too much if I were you.. for once, you had some fat cells removed that will never come back, but you will just never get as fat again as you used to be and hence, your fat cells won't completely fill up again.

There is a tiny risk though of the fat cells on the edge becoming bigger so that there's more of weird transition. But since you're in good hands and are very vigilant yourself, this won't happen to YOU!

This filling up of adipocytes apparently does happen to foolish people who think they can still eat as much as they used to eat when that food made them fat in the first place. Probably resveratrol would help to limit fat accumulation.

I wish they would just die. Would be so nice to kill them off, but no, they just shrink down then fill back out. and multiply like rabbits if not careful.

Oh, yes of course. Forgot you were the leanest person she ever needed to do a tummy tuck on. So: in that case you've got absolutely nothing to worry about!

How does a king size air mattress fold up and fit in a box in a closet? (minus the starving) :lol3:

So.....if fat cells don't die, then could this be the reason that people who used to be obese and then lost the weight find it terribly easy to get fat again? Or is that just my imagination?

I mean, it makes sense that someone who has a multitude of empty fat cells could gain fat faster since all they have to do is refill the cells instead of making new ones. Or does it not matter?
