OK...hers my question. How do you go about getting a reversal done? Is it more painful than having the initial surgery? Does medical help with the cost (In canada) And does you family doc do it or do you go to a specialist? Anyone have any experiences with this?

My Aunt's husband had a reversal. There is a very small window of time after the reversal for pregnancy. At least in their case. Sperm count went done every month.
They ended up doing invitro a couple of times.

My husband had a reversal so we could try for a son. He had to have 2 before it took. He went to a Urologist at UTMB Galveston. I think they run about $10,000 and that was like 12 yrs ago. For us there was not a window for pregnacy but we had to time it just right to make a boy. I believe if you concieve at your 2nd to 3rd day of ovulation you'll make a boy.

I always heard that it was the male that determined the sex of the baby because he carries both X and Y chromosomes. That when the sperm enters the egg, its either an X or Y, which ever one gets in there first is what determines the sex of the baby. Ovulation timing wouldn't have anything to do with that.

Well I read up on the rythm method when I was in nursing school. There is a day or two during ovulation when your juices (not sure how to describe better) are less acidic or lower ph,and this allows more sperm to live. Your normal juices really want to kill off the sperm and the male ones die faster. Thus if you concieve on a low acid day odds are better for boys.
I still practice the rythm method because I can't take bc pills.

I thought that too. That other stuff sounded like an old wives tail. I went to a fertility clinic and they never told me that.

Ask your gyno the vaginal ph varies from day to day.

I don't know anything about the procedure, but I wanted to add in that my dad had a reversal done about ten years after he had a vasectomy. Granted, this was in the late seventies, early eighties...So, the doctor who performed the operation had never done one before and was literally reading from the manual as he did the operation. Needless to say, it worked with no problem, and my parents had my brother and I!

I can see that...but as women we only carry the female chromosome...males carry both, hence the male determines the sex of the baby. Now maybe with the varying of the ph levels....maybe the little boy sperms swim faster to reach the egg depending on timing of ovulation and such....I dunno.

From what I've read, Y sperm are more fragile than X sperm (conclusive proof women are the stronger sex, perphaps?) so the ph levels of your vagina are less likely to affect X sperm than Y sperm. Also, X sperm live longer following ejaculation so there is a greater likelyhood of an X winning the race to the ovum.
So, Dad's determine the sex of the child, but timing one's attempts can influence the sex of the offspring.

Reversal is not covered here. I think it can range from $5000 up to $13000.
It is apparently more painful than the original. You need a specialist- an urinologist (sp?). Not all dr's who do vas can do the reversal.
I don't have personal experience with it, but we just checked it out before getting the vas done.
