Hi everyone, been out of it for about 6 months, but in a few weeks, I am back with a vengence!!

Anyone have any thoughts on a 50% fat eating plan?

I just love nuts, cheese and avocados, and am willing to eat less in volume to have a bit more of the good stuff lol!

I haven't read about anything dangerous, as long as it is healthy fats, just wanted to check in here and see what you all thought.

Also wondering if anyone has followed a similar plan, and had problems sticking to it? Any input appreciated :)

Are you talking something similar to an AD?

Crap, I been gone so long, I forgot all the abreviations lol!

I'm thinking usual protein, 1-1.5g/lb 50% fat, and if there's anything left over, carbs. Is that an AD? Maybe I should alternate this with a 40-30-30

I'll take a stab... Atkins Diet=AD?

50% of what? your bodyweight? your LBM? your macros? I don't go for macro percentages, but here's my take on what I think you're asking.

If you're cutting and you get your minimum protein in, the idea is to also to meet your healthy fat needs. Anything above you have in caloric budget usually is which ever you wish it to be --fats or carbs. You're not building at this point, but if you fair okay on low carbs (not too drained or spacey) then I see no problem with this approach unless you're looking at it from a fiber/vitamin standpoint. For me, this wouldn't be ideal for a number of reasons but it would work for some. Carbs are not essential. Aminos and fat are. You could definitely start out this way and montior your progress and how you feel and could tweak if necessary.

I'd love to hear how it goes for you.

Good post Cindy.

I'll say 'what she said' basically.

Nothing wrong with doing a high fat, and by default, a very low carb diet if that's what you prefer and feel better on.

AD = anabolic diet.

I'm supposing you're talking macros. 50% of calories from fats is where I ended up at for a while when I deliberately lowered protein intake and meanwhile kept carbs lowish, but still above 100g/day. My doctor had asked me to lower protein intake as a blood sample had showed some protein in the urine. When it was done again with P at around 1,8g/kg BW (instead of the usual 2.5g/kg BW), there was no P found.
I've found it hard to keep fats at 50% as it either means that I have to lower carb intake, which I never like when it's going lower than 100g OR that I need to lower P intake which leaves me less satiated. So, right now I'm back at around 45% fats overall. When protein used to be higher , fats were at around 40%.

If we're talking g/kg BW, I'm aiming for around 2.7gC/kg BW, 2.1gP/kg BW and 1.3gF/kg BW. I've noticed I'm feeling much healthier on higher fat intakes, but yet can't go too low in carbs. This explains why my former ass high P intake has dropped from a former 3-3.5gP/kg BW to just merely 2gP/kg . And you know what? I'm feeling much better this way and no longer need to pee 100 times/day or drink excessive amounts of water.

I just went and looked at my percents for the last 10 days and I see I have been at about 50-55% fats. I am getting in 1-1.25g protein per pound of BW as well. My fats are falling over .5g per pound

I am doing strict LC for a while. I felt crappy the 1st few days as my body adjusted, but now I feel fine. No problems sticking to it yet, but again, it hasnt even been 2 weeks. After 2 weeks I plan on refeeding, then possibly repeating depending on where I am at. I DO miss carbs, but so far I am enjoying some foods I havent had in a long time

(I eat all the good fats, and a few "bad" ones as well, such as salad dressings, sour cream, and heavy cream in my coffee.)

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm ready for January!!

Liteweight, yes, I was referring to 50% calories from fat, as I use fitday, and that is how it shows it on the pie chart.

I suppose I will play around with it, at first it seemed high, but from what I'm seeing in the replies, 40 and up isn't that unusual.

Just checkin.

Remember it all depends on your absoute calorie intake. For Jackie, 50% of calories from fat still are only approx. 0.5g of fat/lbs BW
For me that's about 1.3g/kg BW (0.6g/lbs BW) to get to 45-50% fats. Not all that outrageous actually.

This is a good point. My fat at this point is higher than .5g/lbs BW, but not by much. I am getting about 65-75g in a day. 1/2 my BW would be about 55g

Good post, Cindy.

I don't do percentages but once the protein requirement has been met adding in plenty of good fat makes the most sense. I've had great results previously when over 50% of my calories came from fat.

mine average around 45% a day. I feel better at that range. My legs don't look like yours though!
