View Full Version : Sweetner
How many ppl give their young children sugar free "stuff" and what are your thoughts on it.
I have only started consuming splenda since working with Erik and of course the occasional diet soda with aspartame, but I wouldn't let my dd near this stuff. I believe if children consume sweets in moderation they shouldn't have a need for sweetener. It actually upsets me that even vitamins in Canada are all sweetened with some sort of sweetner. I have my dad send me her multi's from Portugal with good old fashioned sugar :D

I let my children use it occasionally. I only buy diet sodas, so if I give them soda (which is rare), that's what they get.

I don't let Lauren have soda. Only milk, juice, water. I know as she gets older she will have it but if I can keep it away now. We don't even keep it in the house. The only thing we buy is fresca and I may let her take a sip of mine. But that is it. We mainly consume bottled water.
That's a nope for me. My kids are underweight, but even if they weren't...I would avoid those chemicals...no point in it.

i dont run out and deliberately buy all artifical swtned stuff for them. They do drink some diet soda and crystal light but water is the main staple here.
Realistically they are eat a whole lot of crap that has chemicals, transfats etc (even if once in a blue moon) and such in it. If they eat a bite or two of my stuff im not fretting it.

I hear what you're saying. We have an elderly cousin who is diabetic and bakes with splenda, when Mariana goes there and is offered a muffin or cookie or something I don't freak out, but I know families who use sweetner as a staple. sugar free this sugar free that etc.

I think it gets a bit harder as they eat other places.(friends) But no, I don't make it a staple, but if they want a piece of my gum or something that I have made for myself...I don't worry
I do make an effort thought to feed them organic meat. That freaks me out just a bit. Hormones in the foods. But even with that--when we go out..
I don't let Mariana chew my gum, I always buy her hubba bubba or some crap like that
So at what point do you let them chew the sugar free gum or drink the crystal light? Or is that something you do not do as well?
I do not give my kids a lot of sugar-free things, but my kids prefer the taste of crystal light. Of course they drink water 80% of the time. But Kainoa WILL NOT drink Kool-aid or juice boxes. He says it is too sweet
So at what age do you say they can have it?

I don't think there is an age per se, but I'd try and steer my dd away from that stuff until adulthood, obviously I know that is not realistic but it's my goal, like Noel most of what goes into her mouth is organic and unprocessed. I'll do it as long as I can.

I also try to avoid artificial sweeteners (and other chemical additives) with the products we all consume at home. I personally can't stand the taste of Splenda.
Oh for sure...if they get a some sugar free gum or something...no big deal. I just don't buy it for them specifically. My kids don't drink pop, and if they have juice...it's just OJ or apple juice.
