I'm not a supplement guy, I'm not that serious. But I did try a formulation of branched chain amino acids one time. Judging by my endurance on the bench, it really seemed to help. I rep'd 225 a total of five more reps than I had ever done. The only change was the supplement.

 What was that nasty stuff I tried at Erik's? It was the most awful thing I've ever tasted, but I swear, every weight seemed really light afterwards. :weightlift2:

Yes it was. :baby: I thought I was going to vomit. My eyes were watering, my tongue was numb, and my ears were ringing. Although like I said, at the gym all of the weights were light. I didn't even think the bar weighed 45lbs. I kept arguing with Noel about it. I need some more of that stuff. :weightlift2:

What the heck kind of creatine did he give you? All the ones I've ever had have been tasteless. I don't even mix it up. Just a spoonful in the mouth then take a swig of water.

Do you swear by?

(and don't say fish oils...we know that  )For what?

I can't think of anything that I can't live without, though 5-HTP is good for stress. I've been using that but ran out recently and wonder if that might have something to do with my just having had a horrific week. I suspect hearing that BOTH licensing and the school board will be making unannounced visits to my site any minute had something to do with it, too...

I'm just about to start some new supps (tonight/tomorrow) & hopefully I'll be able to swear by them. I'll let you know...

So Noel what do the BCAAs do for you? Do you take extra or is it just the ones in the PP.

I actually took them while dieting down last year. I ended up having to stop because what we think might have been something maybe in the binding agent...I had a reaction to and just ended up retaining a ton of water. I am not talking about a little bit either..like something was wrong. When I went off them I went right back down in like 2 days. I haven't used them since, but I know a lot of ppl that like them and use them outside their PP.

I don't know really. I mean , hard to say with that experience. I might talk to Erik about trying them again (different brand though)

Erik
01-13-2008, 01:56 AM
I use protein powder for convenience and you already said to not use fish oils.

And the question was 'what do you swear by'?

So my answer is still 'nothing'.

I cringe when I think of all the money I have spent on supps in the last 20 years of lifting....

I think almost all are crap...except a decent Pro Powder ( I prefer Beverly Ultra Size) for convenience and a multivit---I like the APEX Multi cuz my piss does not turn bright yellow with it....

I am almost wondering if this whole Omega Fish Oil craze is overrated too:ruloco:

I will say a great brand of fish oils I discovered is Eskimo-3-NO fish burps, high quality...

Udder than that nothing works wonders....(that is legal.....LOL)

AUTiger, remember that BCAA make proteins and if you're at a caloric deficit and cutting for a competition, they might not be the best thing for you. I'm sure you're kidneys just couldn't handle the protein they were getting. Staying hydrated plays a big role. After a few kidney stones, I'm a firm believer in proper hydration.
As for caffeine, everyone handles it differently. The level of addiction to caffeine differs from person to person. I unfortunately suffer greatly from withdrawal so I haven't had any caffeine for over 10 years. If I drank a Coke today, I'd be in the bed with a severe headache tommorrow. Strange I know, but that's just the way I am.

If they'd take away all supps, but let me keep just one, it'd be methyl-B12 lozenges. Without them, I'd still be vegetating on the couch. B12-deficiency sux big time.
Sulbutiamine in Fortega (fat soluble B1) comes in on 2nd place as it made so much difference for how well I can tolerate carbs. From devouring an entire roll of (flavoured :) ) rice cakes to just needing 1 or 2 and feel satiated on them is a bloody miracle.

isnt the kidney protein thing a myth? :uhuh:

I used to use BCAA with my xtrainer, all thru cutting, intense training and a deficit. My kidneys did just fine.
If one is prone to kidney problems, might it be different?

RpH
01-13-2008, 11:30 AM
Inatic, that's correct. Most people shouldn't have problems with them. If you're kidneys are filtering proteins, your body is under duress of some sort.

If you only knew how much water I have to drink you would :funny:

I have had other BCAAs and didn't have that effect, that is why i think it was other products in it....but then again, I would have to try it again to see if that is in fact what caused it.

Excessive water can lead to sodium depletion in some people. Ever had trouble sleeping when you're cutting? Might be electrolytes.

Erik
01-13-2008, 05:40 PM
AUTiger, remember that BCAA make proteins

BCAAs are a PART of protein.

and if you're at a caloric deficit and cutting for a competition, they might not be the best thing for you.

Why's that?

I would argue the exact opposite.

I'm sure you're kidneys just couldn't handle the protein they were getting.

No offense, but untrue.

There is absolutely no research to suggest that anyone with healthy renal function will have any issues with protein intake.

trouble sleeping cause you have to get up every 15 min to pee.

the things you do for competitions are not like what the average person goes through.

I wouldn't say that we drink more water than everyone else that is dieting..well, everyone here that is. The only time you do that is when you are about a week out...now that is just all-together different.

To add to my response ...

BCAAs are metabolized in the muscle, not in the liver. If I remember my figures correctly, of all the protein you take in, only 25% of the amino acids make it out of the liver (the rest being either deaminated or transaminated) and of that, 75% is BCAAs (numbers obviously approximate but the take home point is clear). So most of the amino acids you take in are broken down by the liver for energy or other purposes. Exception? BCAAs.

BCAAs are the key protein synthesis AAs - leucine in particular. They're metabolized in the muscle (as a direct fuel source) and they are donors that can help replenish the glutamine pool. (there's even some research that suggested they help with visceral fat loss).

They're basically about as muscle protective as you can get. Well, carbohydrates and high energy intake are also very protein sparing.

For someone consuming a lot of protein (and supplementing with whey protein, which is already high in the branch chain amino acids), it's likely not necessary. For someone lean and trying to get leaner, who due to lowered calories is not using much in the way of protein powder (since solid food is more filling), then BCAAs may have their place in the person's diet - particularly in the peri/post workout period.

There are no drawbacks to BCAA supplementation. The issue is whether or not they're needed and in most cases, for the average person supplementing with whey protein, they're probably not.

Thunder, please don't debate me on the subject, I'll get destroyed. I was speaking about that situation only. If everything is constant and she was swelling from a supplement, no matter what it is, there is a problem with her kidneys. It could be an excipient in that formulation, but something isn't right. Other formulations might be fine, but her body doesn't like that one.

I do use a few supplements - nothing really fancy, mainly protein powder, fish oil and multi/extra vitamins - but nothing that I 'swear by'.

Other that the supplements listed above, I do like creatine (I have always responded well to it), but I don't consider it a necessity.

I swear by B-6 and Magnesium oh and melatonin.
(all of which I learned about here by someone referring me to a book I read, which I cannot remember what it is anymore).
Once I started taking these and I do take them together so I don't know if it is the combination or just one of them. BUT once I started taking them I do not crave sweets, sugar, carbs at night as I use to have a MAJOR issue with waking up at night and eating, :o. I have been taking this combo at about 6pm every night and my life has changed completely. As far as food issues are concerned. I have been dieting and have had NO problems whatsoever, this is a major accomplishment for myself.

I can't say I swear by something I have only been taking for 3 days (and probably shouldn't be mentioning it here :p) but since I started taking d-ribose I have had significantly less pain. :yippee: I'm hoping it is a trend that continues.
