I have been talking about this with quite a few ppl lately. Why is it that we struggle so much going DOWN on our weights so that we can have correct form?

I think that if you realize that by dropping the weight so that your form is corrected that you will then begin to really progress on that movement--as well as see the development that you are after by hitting the muscles that you are suppose to hit.

Soooooooooooo true, if you're form isn't good then you aren't really targeting that mucle if at all.

When I first started back I was only lifting 5lb dumbells in each hand on some Standing DB presses but I wanted to make sure the form was good.

I can do 20lbs in each hand but that is struggling with keeping good form so I will probably try the 17.5lbs today and see how my form looks.

I had a trainer before that was right there with me so he just said do this or do that and I didn't really learn form per se (I would correct if he said I wasn't doing something right) but it is almost as if I didn't have to think per se.

I find this even more so with men. I look around the gym and think to myself, if they were actually doing the movement correctly, they would never be able to use that weight.

Yes, you see more men with a problem checking their ego at the door. But you see more women doing completely stupid exercises.

What are the stupid exercises?

As a universal observation, what I said is very true.

I admit I was guilty of this. Coming on here and seeing some of the numbers posted can be quite intimidating. It also does not help that I have a competitive spirit. But after reading things about "firing" the correct and approprite muscles, I knew that I needed to back down on some of my weights and focus more on ME.

So what if I can not lift as much as some of these powerhouses on here. It should and always will be relative to ME. So what if my squat is a hundred pounds lighter than Mighty Muscles! At least I can look back over my logs and see that I have had at least a 100% increase over the past 5 months on almost every excercise that I do. These are the numbers that I need to stay focused on.

I admit I have been guilty of not wanting to post in the PR thread because my "numbers" may seem small to others- but I have to remind myself to take a look around at the gym and count how many people are progressively moving up in strength WHILE keeping good form. I can count on one hand how many I have seen.

Great thread Noel!

This is a great thread and a great reminder.

I have been guilty of this in the past. I guess it is hard to see yourself 'regressing' in numbers, even if it means that in the long-term, it will benefit you. But you have to look at the short-term contentment/pride of lifting big(ger) weights wrong - and not fully benefit from the exercise, or worse potentially injure yourself - vs. working on the form and seeing those weights go up past what you were even lifting before once you have mastered the form.
