View Full Version : Cardio, SS, HIIT or Both?

I know that HIIT is really a good choice of cardio, but I really enjoy a long run sometimes. Is it benificial to do both or will I be slowing my progress down with SS?

If it's cool to do both, what ratio is recomended. I am going to be starting the full body work out, but also wanted to get my cardio schedule set as well.

Thanks!

SS has its place. It doesn't have to be a one-or-the-other decision. You can implement both into a program. I just wouldn't do a ton of the SS work. It's not necessary.

I was thinking HIIT like tue & thurs and Sat do a long run to get my fix.

i would think this would be fine as long as you are giving your legs ample time to recover.

Any suggestions that might work the best? Should I change my ss run to sunday?

It can't be looked at in the context of just the cardio part of your program. How you structure your week will depend on the nature of your training program.

I'd probably put the intervals on the same day as the day you do heavy leg work - albeit in a separate session.

Ok so in relation to the full body work out in the stickie, I would do my intervals which day since none of the days look to be heavy leg days? But I am probably wrong since I am new!

Day 1 and 3 which means you do them on Monday and Friday (assuming a normal training week). Not Tuesday and Thursday, your off days.

Day 1 and 3.

Ok good to know~

I am taking the rest of this week off to hopefully kick this 2 month long illness and wanted to start out on Monday with this program since I have fallen so behind on my half marathon training.

So if Monday & Friday I did the interval training, if I was feeling good Sunday would be ok to do say a 4-6 mile run? I could do a shorter one, I just love to get lost in the run. I actually get peace and quiet!~

Also should I do cardio on Wed? Or could I break up my long run and do like 2 3 mile runs a week on Wed and Sun?

Shou

Would you suggest starting a program mid week or waiting to start fresh at the beginning of the week?

So in your opinion how would you set-up your leg workout around your carido, so you can have enough time to recover?

I would set up my training first and then work my cardio in. I think it is more important to work HIIT around leg training than just cardio

Shouldn't matter. Personal preference.

As Noel said, the other way around.

Set up your cardio around your heay leg work.

So you do your intense cardio (ie. intervals) on the same day you do heavy leg work, albeit in a separate session ideally. That way your legs have more complete days off.

Ok so Monday/Friday=heavy leg work and intervals

And sat or sunday I might be able to work a long run in??

Just checking becuase I want to optimize my time & results.

One more question...what in the heck is a SHELC? Blondell (Thanks BTW) sent me a copy of a full body workout, but I don't know what some of the acronyms mean.
Also, What's an RDL and a pull through?

yes, it matters. If you did HIIT the right way...you leg training would suffer.

Do you training and then if you can, in another season...do your HIIT. If you have to do them together...do HIIT after.

If you are going to do them in the same time (not recommended but I have to).

Do your weights first then do HIIT or SS.

I am just getting back into lifting, but I swear I am the only girl that uses the not pink, green, blue weights. I get stares. I'm like ok you'll oogle a girl with abs, and a muscular body, but you give me a crazy look while trying to achieve them!

:dope:

Wow his back is and spine is different then ours? interesting. This is the kind of thing that really bothers me .

Here is a quote I found

The abandonment of this exercise (Deadlift) has its roots in many reasons, with the most common being the deep rooted myth that it is hazardous to the lumbar tract of the spine, or vertebral column. This fear is only justified because of the lack of knowledge in anatomy and kinesiology (which is the study of muscles and their movements) by those who work as pseudo instructors in gyms and fitness centers

Welcome to the club. I think most girls here (on the forum) are in that same boat. Don't you know...girls that lift heavy..get bulky? DUH

Do you think I can give you his # and you can call & tell him this and maybe bit#$ slap him over the phone! :catfight:

The crazy thing is, is that he used to do some serious weight lifting, so I though I would pick his brain about maybe adding some variety to my workout. So I was describing the 3 day full body work out and he was telling me that I need to do a split work out and that the dead lifts were worthless for a female.

I had got confused a little, becuae I figured he had to know a little more than me... WRONG!!!

When the PRO bodybuilder said to me that I needed to eat Salmon 6 times a day and a truck load of Safflower oil...I thought..uh NO this isnt right
