I still don't understand the difference between horizontal push/pull. Different people have posted examples of exercises, but I still need to understand what make an exercise a horizontal/vertical or a push/pull. :help:

Whether something is horizontal or vertical depends on the direction the movement would take place from a person's anatomical position, which for simplicity's sake is standing up.

So chest work like benching moves in the horizontal plane. Rowing is the same (opposite of benching). Shoulder pressing is moving in the vertical plane (overhead) and lat work (like pulldowns) is moving in the vertical plane (opposite direction of the shoulder pressing).

So from that you can conclude that,

Chest work - horizontal pressing
Mid back work - horizontal pulling
Shoulder work - vertical pressing
Lat work - vertical pulling

Whether something is push or pull is well, are you pushing or pulling? Any pressing work is pushing. All back work is pulling.

O.k....tell me if I understand this right...so for simplicity, push/pull and horizontal/vertical are kind of the same thing?

Not at all.

Push is push. Pull is pull

Horizontal has a push (chest) and a pull (midback)

Vertical has a push (shoulders) and a pull (lats)
