I have always known that you shouldn't do this (i.e. wake up, go lift), but I am not certain the reason why. .....Ok, GO! :)
For starters you're starving your muscles, you're weak therefore your lifts will suffer therefore short changing your results.
This is the dummy version pls stand by while the experts chime in

:uhuh: I'm pretty sure you just wanted to up your post count :hehe:
I never noticed much of a difference in my performance in the gym ( I always used to train on an empty stomach, cardio or lifting, pre-Erik) but apparently it makes a huge difference, physiologically or something. that was a lot of help, huh :ban:

Actually it has nothing to do with my post count:icanthearyou: yes it makes a huge difference, for me anyway i see a big dif in performance alone now that I eat before I go.

Yeah, I am not sure how it can't make a difference. It helps fuel the workout...you just basically went at least 8 hours with no food...no fuel. Unless you are just coasting through the motions, your food should help get you througha workout.

That makes sense Noel, but for some reason I feel I can push myself harder when I don't have food in my stomach because otherwise I feel like I will :barf:
I think I can go really intensely on an empty stomach, but I burn out quickly, whereas after eating I can last longer in the gym.

Can you give yourself more time to digest?
I know a lot of people will eat 1/2 of their breakfast pre-workout, then eat post workout and then eat the other 1/2 of their breakfast.
You gotta get it in. Maybe it is your food choices. Do something a little easier on the stomach?

Actually, I did well with Erik on oatmeal, PP and blueberries. FORGET the egg whites pre-workout :barf:
The only times it was a bit iffy was on a leg day...and I think that would be the case no matter what

I did that at the beginning of my plans...but towards the later phase it was kinda  there really wasn't enough food to split into 2  Three bites and it was gone

I split mine sometimes, too.
Last night I made like 3 'meals' out of one. I just wanted to graze.

I can't imagine training on an empty stomach. I would never hit my lifts the way I want. I need the energy.

I'm sure you're right, I must just be a :piggie: because I didn't see much point in splitting 1/3 cup oats with blueberries and PP into 2 meals

In more scientific terms, lifting on an empty stomach is catabolic.
I'm not an expert by any means, so don't take my response to this to mean I think I am.

damn thats not even enough for me all pre-workout!!! I have like 8EWs, 1/2C oats, blueberries and a tiny PP.

But you're bulking though, aren't you

Same here!
However, there has been some interesting information on the IF (Intermittent Fasting) front about people training hard and successfully--bulking even--on empty stomachs. Mostly anecdote at Lyle's board, but iirc there was a study or 2 backing it up. Anyone else read this?

I don't eat before going to the gym  but I drink a protein type drink while I am working out. I don't see a huge drop in energy or ability to hit some heavy weights.
I do have coffee though.

That would not work for me. I could not bulk and get all my calories in that way. I need energy. I just don't see it as being healthy or optimal.
