Can someone tell me what the advantage is to eating high carb cereal rather than fruit with your protein shake PWO?

Not that you have to have high carb cereal after your workout ... any starchy type carbohydrate will do but ...
Fruit, or rather, fructose (one of the sugars in fruit) is a type of sugar that one, preferentially refills liver glycogen (as opposed to muscle glycogen) and two, yields a low insulin response.
Mind you, fruit is not ALL fructose (there is some glucose in there too), so some fruit can be ok, but it's probably more efficient to focus on some quick digesting carbohydrates instead.
