View Full Version : Losing my grip

I am having trouble keeping my grip during deadlifts. By the last rep, I'm holding the bar by my fingertips, and I end up sacrificing reps not because of my legs, but because of pain in my wrists. I'm using lifting gloves, and I've heard of the lifting straps, but is there something I might be doing wrong in lifting the bar? My wrists are absolutely aching right now and they look a little swollen....

Yeah...I think I may have to go that route...

Do you use gloves and straps?

Yup. I got sick of the callauses (sp) and of being limited in my lifts.

I don't have straps yet and I do the over under grip (whatever that;s called) it helps a lot

:yeahthat: Before I bought straps, I did a alternating grip (one hand over and one hand under)

be careful with the gloves and straps...that might make grip difficult as well(makes the bar thicker). Amy had trouble with this as well--she is working on grip strength..... can't remember what it is she is doing to help...

I think I recall there being some reason not to do the alternated grip. Can anyone refresh my memory on why?

I think because you tend to grip always the same way. Like I always did left hand under right over but did not do the other way cuz it felt awkward. So maybe creating an imbalance is my guess. So I switched to both over. I use straps.

I'm questioning the glove use anyhow because it does make for a thicker grip. Maybe just straps then, no gloves...

I've been doing this for over a yr, so now I probably have an imbalance? I did not know that.
I need me some straps fo sho
I do the exact opposite left hand over and right hand under :lol3:

Yeah, I used to feel the same way. But I don't like my hands more manly thank Nigel's! :funny:
P.S. another avi change...nice! :)

George has softer hands then me, but then again that's nothing to brag about. Besides I can't lift with gloves so that's that

I also think that your hands get used to it. I have had those for a bit but at other times they aren't bad. Suck it up

I use hooks and love them! They feel weird at first but once you get used to them you won't go back. By the last few reps the hooks basically hold the bar and you don't have to rely on your grip at all.
Try some on before you buy them- make sure they don't scratch your skin, and that they're padded on the inside (the part that wraps around your wrist).

Also, when you're using much heavier weights, using an alternating grip can leave the bicep of the under grip arm at higher risk for injury.

Gloves suck! I quit using them. I seemed to get some form of calluses no matter what. I quit using them 3 years ago, and have never gone back. I have smallish hands to so I don't need extra bulk.
I use straps for heavy DL's and Rows, and also the alternating grip.

Sea salt and dishwashing liquid gets rid of Callouses better then anything.

I would not think that is good to rely on hooks. I would rather work on grip strength and use straps. But I would want to be able to grip eventually. Hooks would not help you to obtain any grip strength IMO.

Good Point.

I switch over/under then under/over. I also press my thumb against my fingers to try and keep my grip tight til I finish.

Sometimes on my last set I will just hold the bar as long as I can. You can do the pinch plates thing or there are bars out there that are bigger to get your grip stronger.

I've never used straps or hooks. How much more weight can you pull using them?
