What's the difference? They look the same to me. How do you tell them apart?

A split squat is a stationary lunge. Once you step forward, you don't step back. Instead, from the split stance position, you simply go up and down. (ie. the front foot stays planted for the duration of the set).

With a lunge, you lunge forward, and then drive back up to the standing position.

I enjoy split squats a whole lot better than lunges. Did I just say enjoy?

I am tossed up on which I like more. I used to HATE lunges, but now that my legs are coming along nicely, I am liking them more :)

Anyone like Bulgarians?

I like them more than both of these.

I hate all single-leg work. But I do it.

I like bulgarians. They're frickin' hard, but good.

I find lunges harder than split squats.

So, are alternating lunges bette than stationary?

SusanF

I think alternating feels easier as your legs get a bit of a break in between reps.

:yeahthat: I have reverse lunges and splits right now and when I do one leg at a time, I'm exhausted! Alternating is easier since you do get that break per se.

I like Bulgarians better than split squats... I find split squats much harder when my right foot is back - it's the foot that had surgery and balance on it is difficult. I think it's probably god for me to work on it, but it is MUCH easier with the left foot back...

I like Bulgarians. I like lunges and split squats too. And let's not forget about step-ups. :hamster:

I don't think it's a question of one being better than another, just different.

I don't like reverse lunges. I can't keep my balance for the life of me.

That's an interesting observation - reverse lunges are typically the most stable of the variations.

I have a harder time balancing w/ reverse also.

I find doing the split squat less time consuming then the standard lunge. Maybe I'm doing the wrong thing, but I'm def sore in all the right places afterwards. However, I was already over the soreness the next day, which is more proof to me that I'm doing things right with my training. I'm beginning to really get the hang of this! :beach:

I have to say that by the end of the 2nd set, my legs are dying doing the split squat. However, I power through to the end and 3rd set, where I'm dead in the legs by that point. However, it's worth it! :thumb: Everyone looks at me funny as I'm all wobbly for a few minutes...

They are all killer to me as I'm just starting out. But I do understand wanting to alternate because I want to cry when I don't.

i find that true too.

I dont care for bulgarians but it's more that my body hates me when i do them. Dam bio mechanics.

I'm going to start doing split squats. I was doing reverse lunges with the barbell but honestly, my balance sucks and I get nervous. I do them in the squat rack so I know I won't totally wipe out, but still the nerves throw me off.

With bulgarians, my back foot that is on the bench always seems to press into it, thus kinda not getting a bang for my buck. I try to concentrate on just lightly resting it on there, but i always seem to kinda push my way back up through that foot. It drives me nuts!

You know, I have this problem too! I always feel like I'm using my back foot to help me push through. SO frustrating!
