View Full Version : Eating at work

For any of you that work as a bartender or server, what do you do for food during your shift?
I recently started bartending again, and at my new job *technically* we are not supposed to eat during our shift, only before or after. Since I'm new, I don't really want to be breaking the rules already. Also, I have heard that it is supposedly a "health code violation" to bring outside food into a restaurant (sounds like b/s, but I'm not sure).
So what should I do when I work a 6 hour+ shift, especially if its really busy?
Anyone have any advice or tips on how you manage to eat during your shift? Or do you just eat before and after, and suck it up while you're working?
I would bring your own food anyways. I'm not "allowed" to eat at work either but I sure do.. I just wouldn't broadcast it. leave stuff in your purse and if you have to you could even go into the bathroom with it, lol

I get really light headed when I go for to long without eating - blood sugar issues. When I was a bartender back in the day, I just told them that and ate before and after my shift, but had something that was very fast and easy to eat as a snack in between. While very gross, there were times I remember eating in the bathroom before rushing back out.

I was thinking about making some mini protein bars and stashing them in my purse.
The thing I find odd is that its perfectly acceptable to go have a cigarrette out back, but we can't eat

So, you get cigarette breaks? Then why couldn't you just take your food "out back" and eat during your breaks?
If there truly is a health violation issue, then you won't have the food "in" the bar. I would look into the whole health violation thing though, I would think it would only matter if you were bringing in outside food and serving to customers or maybe storing it in the same place as the other food. But what do I know? Only speculation. :)

You could always do a quick Google search to see what the health code rules are for your area. It sounds like B.S. to me, too, but you still want your ass to be covered, y'know?

Shakes.
They're portable and you can cram all kinds of shit in them.

I bring chicken and sweet potato in a baggie and keep it in my apron. People pick at the bread and other food, so sometimes they don't even notice what I am eating. Others stick their nose in my face, and say, "what is that."
You need to eat, so bring something and see what happens.

I stick a couple homemade protein bars in the freezer overnight in a ziploc baggie. Then I take them to work with me. They thaw out and stay cool and are quick and easy to eat when you only can sneak away for about 2 minutes. At first EVERYONE asked "what are you eating?" now they all just say "there's Jypsie with another crazy protein bar thing".

if you ask me that's just bullsh**.
I'm sure it's pretty much basic labour law that an employee is entitled to leave their work area and take a short break at least once during an 8 hour work day. Not sure where you live but check into it.

some days I would wait table for 14 hours straight and we would get one food break a shift and get food and bring it in the back by the food prep area and eat it as long as our customers couldn't see us is was down. But they regulated our food only salads and chicken breast. Hooter's you know you have to look fab all the time.
I think the smoking thing would be a good argument if they sadi you couldn't eat your food. Like so its okay to ruin you lungs by smoking but a girl can't take a quickbrak to eat to stay alive and live a healthy life.
and that no outside food law total crap they just want to make money off of you eating there food and its made more for the customers then the employees.

I agree.
Total double standard. Smokers can take a break, but you can't eat?
Good thing you're not diabetic.

Absolutely.
Two things everyone else gets to have...smoke breaks and coffee...if you don't really want to raise a fuss about the crap double standard there....then just get a travel coffee mug and put a double shake in there and sip it throughout the day

Thats what I did this morning, only a single shake though.
I think after I've been there a while longer it won't be a big deal, I just don't want to be breaking all the rules right off the bat.
