and I have it. In a relatively mild form.
However, while it seems to look better, the condition of it seems to be worse (if that makes sense). Split ends have turned into ends that can just be pulled off (at the 'dots' it just breaks off). Now, I can also just pull on my hair at the ends and I get a few strands in one light tug. GROSS.
Any suggestions?
I heard extra virgin olive oil for 15 mins...?

I would be checking your diet out first of all. Usually that is a sign that something is missing. Too much/too little of something. I think if you have too little carbs in your diet. Don't quote me on that though. Maybe you could google it or something.

It sounds like your hair is lacking protein, which gives it strength. (Go figure) You can moisturize until the cows come home, but if your hair is lacking protein it will still break off.
And Olive oil will just make your hair oily.
And then it will still break off. :(
Talk to a professional, get a salon protein treatment about once a week and you'll see a big change. My favorite is Curessence by Aveda but Extreme Protein Reconstructor by Redken is excellent as well. And you can also use them both at home.

I've put olive oil in overnight. I wash it in the morning. I do that a lot, actually. It leaves it with more shine than normal and a lot softer.

Sounds like it's time for a trim-- you can't repair split ends or those break-y ends (I have had those too, from too much heat styling).
Deep conditioning like others mentioned will help keep your hair healthy but it can't fix what's already been done.

Thanks for the suggestions!
Im going to have to wait till im not broke as f*** to take some of these approaches, so the mane will have to wait!
I don't think conditioning or putting anything on your hair will solve the problem. It has to do with something missing from your diet. My hair used to so that too, and still does to a point....but since I've upped my good fats, I can tell you that my hair is A LOT better. I'd actually go talk to your doc about it.

I do this too & I do it with my daughter's hair to, it leaves a fantastic shine & it's not greasy at all, but like other people have suggested to you I think you need to take a look at your diet & start there

Diet eh?
Wow... actually it makes sense to me now, because when I was on atkins I lost a lot of my hair (used to be gorgeous and thick, now thin as hell).
I still eat relatively low carb, maybe that has something to do with it.

I wash it first, then air dry it. I usually put enough in to saturate the hair & masage it in, ya you'll want to wrap it up in something or else your pillows & sheets will be a mess in the morning, then wash it out in the morning,

Cut it.
You cannot do anything to "fix" the parts that are already damaged. If you moisturize, or use treatments, it will only make the hair feel softer-temporarily. Nothing will penetrate the damaged parts. Will just seem to "smooth" it out a little. If you won't part with it (your hair), go with your better brands, like Aveda. I LOVE curessence. I used to work at an Aveda salon. LOVE them.

Okay, so, I did not want to use the olive oil I have and thought I'd try vaseline. Uh, oil freakin' slick. I had to wash it 4 X last night. When I got up this morning I put it in a bun for work. SO I have now just taken it out and it is as slick as rick. Now what? Any ideas on how to get it out? How many more washes?

OH, I'm sorry, but that made me laugh. Vaseline won't help your hair in any way, but I'm guessing you already figured that out. It's a petroleum based product. Try using Dawn dish detergent to wash it out. Then your regular shampoo and condition it well. Good luck.

Yes, I am pretty much a dumb ass.... I'll try dish soap tonight. I'll post back tomorrow on how it works out.

Ok hon, sorry but that was damm funny to me.
If I remember correctly, one of the daycare teachers used this on her daughters hair at night time (her daughter had head lice) & it would smother the eggs when they tried to hatch. I know TMI but whatever, so other than the purpose of killing eggs, I don't think vaseline holds any other purpose for your hair, to get it out you will likely have to wash & wash & wash your hair, I personally woudn't put dish soap in my hair, I would just keep washing it until it feels soft again, if I find out anything else I'll let you know ;)

It's a disaster, seriously. It is funny as heck, but why me??? I was under the impression from this thread that anything like oil or like a vaseline would work. So, I slatherred it on for about an hour last night and then had a shower. It did not seem so bad last night when it was wet, but my hair is pretty slick straight. I htink though I'll try the dish soap and then just go with the shampoo till it seems to be gone. Maybe if I had lice I wouldn't feel so stupid about it now.

So, after half a bottle of palmolive dish soap, I think I finally was able to wash the vaseline out of my hair. Needless to say, I'll never ever try another at home beauty tip, EVER.

You have to remember, hair is already dead...just like your finger nails. There is nothing to make it better, other than cutting it off...the parts that are damaged. Bad news. Sorry. (I'm a hairstylist).

Try the tips, just don't modify them and include things like Vaseline and you should be fine

I used to have hair like you described. Normally, most deep conditioning treatments never worked well, but if you would like to try another one, the Intensive deep conditioning treatment protein pak from Kiehl's worked wonders for me.

Olive oil , hot oil treatments...whatever...they make your hair feel better temporarily, but all they are doing is coating your hair with the oil which makes it feel soft. You're much better off to be using a good quality professional product daily and doing things like not brushing your hair when it's wet (much more fragile when wet), if it's tangly use a wide tooth comb in the shower when you have conditioner in and don't towel dry your hair - just wrap it up in a towel for a few minutes - that should be enough to absorb most of the water. Also, if you use a hair dryer or straightener every day invest in a heat shield product to protect your hair from heat damage. And as many others said, when your hair/ends are hopeless - suck it up and cut them off. (Ex- hairdresser)
