I am having a brain fart here, I think I should know this, but....

Since "abs are made in the kitchen", (I am assuming that goes for all muscles), is cardio REALLY necessary for fat loss? Is it possible to eat clean and lift heavy and still loss fat? How important is cardio?

The way I understand it, too much cardio can start to catabolize your muscles. I think I have read that HIIT 2 x a week is ok tho, but is it necessary?

I ask, because I don't like cardio. I am doing T's 3-day split and can't figure out when to do cardio. I have tried doing cardio each day I have gone, but was only successfull in completing 20 minutes, once, that was on day 2. With my schedule, it is hard to get to the gym more then 3-4 times a week.

I think if you are getting decent results by eating clean and in an appropriate defecit then you can forgo cardio. Its when the results start to slow down that you may want to add some. I have not done much cardio since January and have lost a lot of fat. I think you can get away with little to none to a certain point, then it will become more difficult to become leaner without something additional :)

Just my .02 cents

The key is to do as little cardio as necessary to get results. A caloric deficit is a caloric deficit whether it comes from nutrition or energy expenditure via exercise.

There are benefits to intense interval work however (AMPK, etc). You just can't overdo it.

That said, lighter people likely will have to do some cardio, given they're not going to be creating such a big caloric deficit unless their calories are extremely low.

Plus doing cardio lets you eat more.

I feel your pain. I hate cardio and it's really hard for me to get it in.
