View Full Version : Sweet potatoes vs. Yams

Okay...so I was in the store and was aware that they usually label the sweet potatoes as yams so that's what I buy. They are orange skin and orange on the inside.
The other day, I saw this new thing and it was purple and labelled purple sweet potatoes. They were massive and I kinda pictured them as what a real yam would really look like yet they were labelled as sweet potatoes.
So then I was totally unsure about what to buy...are the yams really sweet potatoes and the sweet potatoes really yams? Why don't they label them correctly? Are there such things as purple sweet potatoes that are really sweet potatoes and just purple? And why would that be? Are their macros different? WTF?

That was awesome.
I did some further research. I think the purple ones are japanese and have a different flavour. I think I might buy one to try.

It was a good thing you answered. I almost answered my own question again after my googling.

Yes, they were white on the inside and bright purple skin. They were also significantly larger then the orange ones.

the japanese sweet potatoes are supposed to be obsessively better than normal ones for protein pancakes. they get drier than regular ones when baked, so they make the pancakes even fluffier. try using a couple of ounces of japanese sweet potatoes with the oats and egg whites to see the difference in texture and lightness. yum.
Oh goodie! The purple ones are amazing. The orange ones are...yuk.

I only ever ate the purple variety when I was in NZ. Now that I'm in Australia they don't seem as common and I have to buy the yukky golden ones :cheeky:

Good Questions! The store I o to has sweet potatoes and yams. The sweet potatoes are yellow white on inside and brown on out then they have the yam orange things. I was just getting the rootie looking white ones label sweet potatoes. Hmm
This thread's kinda dead - but i found the site for the purple potatoes I've been eating. I guess they really are potatoes, not yams, after all.

No thread is ever really dead!
I really should buy this one I see and take a picture. It's bright purple, not rosy purple or brownish purple...I'm talking serious purple. And I'm pretty sure it's white on the inside....but then I haven't cut one open in the store so I'm just assuming.
I don't know why I haven't bought one...it's like I'm scared of it or something.

I missed this thread the first time around... The Japanese sweet potatoes are brown on the outside, deep purple on the inside. They are drier than orange sp's, but I haven't tried them in a pancake or anything. That sounds good! I have been eating them baked, and they are quite good. Just coat them with a little olive oil or something before you bake them, because they do dry out quite a bit and turn whitish.
Janey, buy a Purple Monster and tell us what it's like on the inside. I am curious now what it is. Ours are somewhat small, but then again I buy them from local farmers that can't be bothered with appearances like a commercial farm would. I have had sp tempura with some pretty big slices, so I know they get big.

I will pick one up tomorrow. Wish me luck.
Good luck, Janey!
You know, this might be a really dumb question but whoever it was eating something with dark purple skin and white meat, are you sure that it wasn't mis-marked and is really an eggplant? That is a perfect description for eggplant.

poke, did you mean me? Cuz if you did, I posted a link to the brand's website up above. They are called Purple Sweeties. Sounds like the company does lots of eco-work too. I'll have to read more on them.

Ah, ok. Once I started the post I couldn't remember who said what exactly, and all I remembered was purple skin and white on the inside. Nevermind then! :)
Janey, that looks like a regular red potato, but much bigger than I've ever seen! Have you tried cooking it? What is the texture like?
janey

It looks so much redder then it really is. I new someone was going to say that!
I haven't cooked it yet. That's the next big step. :baby:
Maybe tomorrow, after my workout. I will keep you updated.

Purple Sweet Potatoes are also reffered to as Purple Sweeties. White inside and just as good as regular. sp. They do seem to be firmer after cooking though to me. You can cook them just as you would regularly. Fortinos at Eastgate (think your in Burlington) has them and they just had little recipe cards out on Saturday with them. i am sure the Plains road or New Street location would have them as well.
BTW, Yams and Sweet potatoes are in fact two different root veggies.

Christina! I am in Burlington. I have never seen them at Fortinos but they have them at Food Basics. That's where I got this one. Although I haven't been to Fortino's in a few weeks so they may have them now as well.
I'm going to try it tonight. :)
