View Full Version : Valsalva maneuver
I just read about this in my NSCA study book. It kind of made sense I guess. I think I've been doing it instinctively during heavy squats and deadlifts. Do you guys use it? Do you have any more articles/explanations on it?
Thank you! ;)

Lol i thought it was funny seeing this, cuz we have to have our patients do it all the time for Ultrasound to see bloodflow. I do it subconciously when i do most of my compound movements as well. Its basically bracing your abdominals and I really think its helped in stabalizing and strengthending them!

I find it helpful when reaching the last couple reps of heavy loads. Other than that, I try to keep my breathing paced...exhaling on the concentric.

 It's also supposed to significantly reduce the stress placed on the vertebral column.
I'm just looking for an easier way to give verbal instructions to a client as to how to do it. Would this one be ok:
"Inhale through the easiest part of the exercise; contract your abs, 'close' your throat and hold your breath through the 'sticking point'- the hardest part of the exercise; exhale immediately after".

What we have to say to our patients: "Bear down like your having a "movement"" LOL :lol3:

Any of them actually have one after doing so?
I do this on all my O-lifts and heavy squats/deads. It activates my internal weight belt and keeps everything tight. It's also how I clear my ears for scuba, FYI.
