I'm curious as to what you all pay for food in different areas of the country (and Canada.)
I'm in Nashville, TN, and I shop at Kroger or Publix, and get a few things at Costco.
96% ground beef - $6 per lb
ground turkey breast - $5 per lb
chicken breast - 5 lb bag frozen from Costco for $15
eggs - 2.5 dozen medium eggs for around $3
cottage cheese - 1 carton (16 oz) for $2-2.50
peanut butter - 1 jar for about $2.75
store brand coco puffs - $1.60-2
broccoli - 1 wrapped pack (3 crowns?) for $2-2.50
mushrooms - 8 oz for $1.50-2.00
red bell peppers - package of 6 from Costco for $7
apples, nectarines, pears - almost $2 per lb
lettuce - 3 hearts of romaine for almost $3

Well, I am really picky about my food supply and eat only organic produce and natural, hormone free meats (grass-fed beef) so
Turkey tenderloins: $7/lb
Filet Minion: 25.99/lb
Fish: anywhere from 15.99/25.99/lb
Eggs: for the ones that I eat the whole egg $6/dozen for the ones I only eat the whites 3/lb
Veggies I pay about the same, but I have a terrible avocado habit and those suckers can add up
96% ground beef - ORGANIC $3.99/lb in bulk
ground turkey breast - $5.99/lb (I dont buy)
chicken breast - ORGANIC $1.99/lb on sale in bulk
eggs - 2 1/2 doz is $3.99 or so, Organic Free Range $1.99/doz
cottage cheese - ORGANIC $2.99 for a 16 oz container
peanut butter - ORGANIC natural $4.19 for 16oz jar
broccoli - .99 cents per double crown head (I don't buy)
red bell peppers - ORGNANIC $2.19 each
apples, nectarines, pears - ORGANIC $1.99/lb
lettuce 3 heart romaine- ORGANIC $3.49

I'm living in Virginia, just moved up from Florida a couple months ago. Groceries are way more expensive here!

96% ground beef - $6 per lb (at least)
ground turkey breast - $5 per lb
chicken breast - regular prices are $5/ lb
eggs - dozen large is $2
cottage cheese - 16 oz for $2.50
peanut butter - 1 jar for $3
store brand coco puffs - don't buy them, but Cocoa Crispies are $3.50 a box
broccoli - usually $2.50 a bunch
mushrooms - 8 oz for $1.50-2.00 (same here)
red bell peppers - $4/lb on average
apples, nectarines, pears - nectarines are in season now, so $3/ lb
lettuce - 1 red leaf bunch for $2

No way filet is $4 per pound.
I've looked for cheaper 96% beef, but the only store that even sells it is Kroger, and it's the Laura's Lean brand. I guess I'll have to break down and look at Walmart, but I doubt they'll have it.
Is there any other cut of beef that's 96% lean?

I usually catch the sales on it. But normally it's typically no more than about 5/pound. Good ol' Costco.
At the regular grocery stores, it's always more than I pay at Costco.
Of course, now that I say that, there's going to be a price increase

Is there any other cut of beef that's 96% lean?
Ok I looked it up and I found this list:
The following cuts of beef are listed in order of leanness, and all contain less than 10 grams of total fat, 4.5 grams of saturated fat or less.
• Eye round roast
• Top round steak
• Mock tender steak
• Bottom round roast
• Top sirloin steak
• Round tip roast
• 95 percent lean ground beef
• Flat half of a brisket
• Shank crosscuts
• Chuck shoulder roast
• Arm pot roast
• Shoulder steak
• Top loin steak (such as strip or New York steak)
• Flank steak
• Rib-eye steak
• Rib steak
• Tri-tip roast
• Tenderloin steak
• T-bone steak
So does that mean that any of those cuts above the 95% ground beef would be ok to substitute for the 96% ground beef in my plan?
What's wrong with the Laura's brand?

Wal-Mart does have 96% lean beef, and I think last time I looked it was $8-something for 2.25# so not too bad.
Honestly, I don't pay attention to what we pay for stuff. If I need it, I need it. And for convenience sake, I'm not going to go looking for deals. Avocados and bell peppers are the only things I notice because they are so freaking expensive and we plow through them!
What's wrong with the Laura's brand?
:yeahthat: I've bought it before and it was good.

Nothing's wrong with it except that it's $6 per pound. If I could find cheaper meat that is just as lean, I'd rather do that.
I'll look at walmart and see if they have the ground beef any cheaper.

Oh, I see. As I posted above, Wally World does have it cheaper. :thumb:

I live in the NW (Washington State) and I found 96% lean ground beef at Super Wal-Mart --- 1lb for 3.99, not too bad considering I was shopping at Fred Meyer and 93% -- 1lb was 4.29. So definitely check out Wal-Mart.

It is expensive but Kroger and walmart have their own extra lean ground beef that is the same as the Laura's now.

My Kroger doesn't have it. They only have the Laura's.
No Trader Joe's around here. :( Keep in mind we just got a Whole Foods about 6 months ago.

Publix does special orders from the meat department, but they won't regularly stock an item that you request. I guess it's because not enough people will buy it. I requested turkey tenderloins once and they called me when they came in. I don't remember how much it cost. Worth a try if Walmart doesn't have the beef.

Jen, WHERE do you get organic chix breast for 1.99/lb???? 1.99/lb is a decent price on regular chicken. I'd love to buy organic chix but am NOT spending $6-8/lb for it (and have never seen it on sale).
I can comment on what I just bought at Meijer (produce only as my trip had to be quick).
raspberries: $2/pint
strawberries: $2
bag of apples $3.99/3.5#
2 bags salad/lettuces- 2.79 (buy one get one)
Organic spinach: $2.50 (5 oz.)
portabella mushrooms: $2.00 (6 oz)

I have no idea how much stuff costs. I just put it in the cart and go! It's usually $150/wk for hubby and I.

Keep in mind depending on where you buy, some things labeled "natural" may in fact be organic, but for smaller farms/businesses getting the "organic" label jus isn't cost effective. I'm very fortunate to have a local "food market"-family owned, and they have all their own butchers and area farms that they do business with. I emailed them about their chicken as it was labeled natural-lo and behold, no hormones, or antibiotics. They cannot afford to get the organic label though, and it's not quite organic. Still better than alot of major grocery stores. Very fresh, and always $1.79/lb. Tastes WAY better than grocery store chicken too. They only carry fresh produce and meat/poultry/fish, you're never quite sure what will be in, but it's so worth it. Otherwise...
Green Bell Peppers .99 c/lb
organic bagged baby spinach $2.99 for 5 oz
almost died on this one-went up a $1 in price this week:
organic seedless cucumber $3.99!!!
"natural" turkey breast $3.99/lb
wild alaskan salmon and halibut $20-25/lb
24 oz frozen spinach $2.50
16 oz frozen green beans $2.50
Blueberries $2.50/pint

This is how I shop as well - if I need it, I need it.
I spend a lot in groceries, but to me it's worth it not to eat beef or chicken or produce loaded up with chemicals.
I recently saw a documentary about corn and cows and now I'm all over looking for grass fed AND finished beef.

I unfortunately am the same way. I have a basic knowlegde of what items cost, but if I need I get it. Maybe this is why I'm broke :mecry: Especially when I spent my Friday nights at the grocery store because I love it. I love going through the isles and looking at food
bag of orange roughy for $6.99 and that lasts me 2 1/2 days (eating 6oz 2x a day).
Eggs 1 dozen $3.19 whatever is on sale
Egg Whites 32oz carton $4.79
Ghirardelli chocolate bag (oops) $3.50
Brown rice 32oz bag $1.50
Milk whatever is on sale and under $3.50 usually

I usually buy my produce, meat, eggs, and milk at Costco and have noticed that the prices there have gone up quite a bit. Organic spring mix used to be $3.19 and it is now up to $4.29. After labor day in MN, prices for fruit go up almost 75%- last week of August 4lbs of Strawberries at Cosco were $4.99, this week it was up to $7.50!
I am always aware of food prices and it is out of habit. When I was little I would go grocery shopping with my mom and I had a list and an amount I needed to keep it under, we used to carry calculators with us to make sure we stayed under that amount.

Peach: $4-6 per peach (!)
Puts things in perspective!
