View Full Version : Bulking Question
I know there is no way to determine how much muscle or how much fat are gained during a bulk, but is the muscle gain or fat gain linear at some point? If someone starts a bulk 12 pounds below their set point, do they add a higher percentage of fat until they get back to their set point?
For those of you how have done successful bulks from being fairly lean, what did your body do? I guess I just want to talk about bulks in general.

Linear, in what sense? I am not quite sure I understand the question.
Noel and I briefly discussed this last week. She said that if you are more lean going into a bulk then its more likely you'll add a higher percentage of muscle than fat during bulking. I'm not sure if that's what you were asking, though.
Kind of what Cara said. Does your set point play a role in how much muscle or fat you gain. It seems like my body wants to put on more fat now that I'm lean. I guess that's just not the case or is it?

Actually, I've read what Cara said too. The leaner you are going into a bulk, the higher percentage of muscle you will gain vs. fat.
I was fairly lean when I started my last bulk and the first few lbs were definitely the hardest to deal with. I felt fluffy and yucky (which makes sense because I had been lean for a few months and gotten used to it). Maybe that's why you 'feel' like you're gaining more fat (you've gotten used to the leanness).

Don't forget the role that your own genetics will play in this.

My genetics don't want me this lean that's for sure.

Matt just know you are lean enough to start bulking, embrace the gains as you will gain. Some will be muscle, some will be fat.
Interestingly (to me anyway) when i did that, twice now, when it came off, my body looked better each time. (thanks Coach! :D )

gosh, that is so good to hear, if/when it ever happens to me - I fear that but hearing that you say the end result is better is a GOOD thing !!!

Have fun!! Focus on the yummy food and the strength increases in the gym- not on outgrowing your skinny clothes. If you need to buy a couple of basics in a large size, do so! ;) Ross Dress for Less is a great source for affordable clothing.
