View Full Version : True Protein
Who are the True Protein concoction experts here? I know Mols uses TP.
What do you get? I'd be most concerned with flavouring I'd think.
I used to use it all the time before I started being sponsored by Pro Lab (partially) I used a straight whey and also a custom whey/casein blend. The only flavors I tried though were the banana and vanilla both of which I really liked!
I posted what we ordered in the Jay Robb thread. Kevin loved the banana casein PP. The vanilla is good too. I was told to get the premium flavors.

the premium flavor additions contain artificial sweeteners (I noticed you order it with that and then added stevia).
Ingredients: Natural/Artificial Flavor, Natural/Artificial Color, Sucralose (Splenda), and Acesulfame K

Like I said in the Jay Robb thread...I use the vanilla and love it... My blend is Micellar Casein (45%) Whey Protein Isolate/cold-filtration (50%) and Hydorlyzed Whey Isolate/Ultra Grade (5%) it mixes well, is tasty and I think realy well priced
we've ordered from TP for a couple years now. Will really likes the tropical blend with stevia
What's the protein make up you get?
Now I get the Gemma Protein, I prefer the texture and its much cheaper......I used to get the Whey Isoloate Microfiltration or a mixture of hydrolyzed whey protein high grade with whey isolate (75/25) I added BCAAs a few times but stopped now that I have separate BCAAs. For nighttime I have 50/50 Micellar casein/calcium caseinate in Premium orange creamsicle. If you want stevia only, id go with the fruit punch or the chocolate and either double up the stevia on your order or add your own when you make your shake. I

what is the texture of Gemma protein like...compared with whey isolate?
what is the texture of Gemma protein like...compared with whey isolate?
Gemma is thicker, mixes thicker and is great with just ice and water. Now when i have stright isolate with water it just tastes like water to me lol. Its nummy, especially when making a shake shake like with cottage cheese or fruit. Oh and BTW the reason I tried it in the first place is because its a pea protein, and i have absolutely NO troubles digesting it! That sold me.
What's the protein make up you get?
100% cold filtered whey protein isolate, then pick the PLAIN flavoring + stevia. nothing else.
Plain? :whut:
Do you have taste buds?

anyone have a concoction that would mimic muscle milk light from True protein? In flavor and mix
My order came in today.
I have about 5 different things. That's the one thing I definitely like - I can buy the same protein product, but in 5 different flavours if I want to (1lb increments).
Will report back.

The Strawberry isolate i have is really good (this is a Premium flavour)
The Tropical is kinda weak in flavour (just stevia)
Chocolate MPI - bland tasting; expected chalky consistency.
Still have a Vanilla WPC and a Chocolate WPI to try.

Goodness...how in the world do you come up with a custom "formula"? There's so much to decihper. Where do you even begin to figure this out? I do like that you can buy a 1lb. small quantity. If you buy something you can't choke down, you haven't broken the bank. And, the RTD bottles are a nice option. My question is, does any of it taste as good as BSN lean dessert?
Is anyone using the buybulkwhey.com products?

How long did it take everyone's order to arrive? I ordered mine October 19th and it still says "Order has not shipped or there is no tracking info available yet" I hope it means the latter. I'm running low on casein.
Mine took a while, but I'm in Canada.

When I ordered mine it took awhile because UPS screwed up and connected my name with my old N.C. address and routed the package there even though all my info. was correct on True Protein site. The same thing happened to Laura.
You may want to call to make sure that info. on site is correct. It ended up taking a lot longer because they had to intercept the package and reroute it.

Probably because these are the free flavors (which are not that great). The Premium flavors taste really good, but they have sucralose in them. They are supposed to come up soon with Premium flavors sweetened with Stevia, which I would more than likely choose if I wanted a protein sweetened with Stevia.

:yeahthat:
I have vanilla with no sweetener and love it (same blend as Laura). I think it's sweet enough on its own. There is a gritty texture to it, but the flavor is good, IMO.
I've never tried the gemma protein so I can't speak to that, but mine is a nearly 50-50 casein/whey isolate blend and I think it tastes good. I do have banana and the flavor is weak but I prefer that anyway because it doesn't taste like chemical banana that is too overpowering.

Bumping this.
I ordered two batches last night-- casein and whey.
They've got new flavors out... or at least I think they're new. I checked out the TrueProtein forum to see what flavors were good and ended up going with French Vanilla (had this last time, very very good), Coconut Cream, Dutch Chocolate Fudge (got the best review), and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup. All Premium.
I ordered these separately from the protein powders themselves. Last time I had these, I added them to my coffee as well and the French Vanilla especially added an incredible flavor without calories. Good replacement for milk IMO.
I'd imagine they'd be good with things like protein pancakes and egg whites as well.
I'll report back here after I try them all out.

Molly, here's what I found on the TrueProtein forum in the Flavor Review section:
the peanut butter cup flavor is definitely there, and you can discern the chocolate in the background. i was very excited for this one.
the overall flavor is very close to that of a reeses or the peanut butter Flintstones cereal.
tad bit of aftertaste but its probably the wpc.
the color is odd though. sort of like hot cocao and you add too much milk, only way i can describe it. but i'd rather not pay for extra coloring.
easily the best tasting chocolate/peanut butter flavor ive ever had.
easy 4/5

I do  I have about a dozen different Capella flavor drops.
IMO I prefer the TrueProtein flavor packs. The flavor is much, much more potent. Capella's butterfinger, graham cracker, snicker doodle, vanilla hazelnut, etc. all of which I have... in all honestly, it's hard for me to taste the difference between them  Once I finish off this set of flavor drops I have -- which won't be for a while, given that they last so darn long  -- I probably won't buy them again. Yes, but...
Sure heat denatures protein, but so what? And yes, as you said, all proteins, not just protein supplements are denatured with heat.
However, even with the unwinding of the protein's structure, the constituent amino acids are still the constituent amino acids - regardless.

I have cooked with protein powders and not always experienced the 'curdling' effect. Depends on the powder/brand.

Scar, I tried two of the soups today (onion and chicken)...I like them made with MUCH more water than called for, and a little salt added, but they work well. Slight after-taste, moreso with the chicken...I'm expecting that I won't notice it with the beef, given they're all beef-based and that was probably a conflict with the chicken flavor.
Now I LOVE sweet sweets, never found a normal shake to be too sweet...but sometimes something besides dessert is nice. Particularly looks normal at work, and also when it's not the blasting hot summer it'll be a good warm-up. Also with the volume, it's pretty filling...normally a shake for me is satiating but not filling. And since you put it in hot water, it doesn't take a bunch of shaking to mix, just a little stirring and sit, stir again and re-heat to suit...not that shaking is actually hard, but I've been known to become really lazy about food when dieting at times.

Question--- if one gets a blend with around 50% casein, and 50% Whey, is it still good to use POST workout? Or is that something better to be eaten at bedtime because of the casein?

The regular choclate and vanilla are completely unsweetened...unless you mark you want stevia added in the sweetener category. The premium natural is flavored with stevia and are suppose to be a better quality flavor. One thing I will say is that when I called to talk to them before I ordered they were very helpful.

i got a couple of the flavor packets and I dont find they are very flavorful. I was expecting the taste to really be enhanced
I believe Cathie is using Stevita choc powdered which she likely gets from Iherb?

I think the powder tastes much better. I've only tried a couple of flavors, but I actually don't care for the liquids :yucky:

I've only used the chocolate stevia powder in my pp .... I am a chocolate freak :yum:
I even put the chocolate stevia in my vanilla pp. The vanilla pp seems to have a little different texture than the chocolate.

After my first batch of custom mix I ordered and just about :puke:, I decided that I could no longer trust myself to make my own mix. I now go with the pre-made solutions
Currently using DC's Protein Formula for whey and Night-Time Formula for casein.

I just ordered the flavor packs of:
premium chocolate - to make my pp even more chocolatey :yum:
natural banana - since I don't get fruit in M1 and I miss my banana flavored oatmeal loaf :mecry:
premium bananas & cream - in case I don't the the natural banana or vice versa and I'm a lil nervous the banana flavor might be a little chemical tasting
I will report back :D

i hope you like the flavor packets.. I didnt care for them in that i felt they didnt add much flavor at all, not that they tasted bad.

natural choc
PB choc
Choc orange
cookie dough
errr... I know there was one or two more.
I hardly noticed a difference in the taste other than the orange.
Not sure if I've posted my review somewhere in this (long) thread so here it goes again: I got the natural, Stevia-sweetened True Protein flavors (not actual PP- just the flavoring that you could add to PP, CC, coffee, pancakes etc- basically anything you want to sweeten&flavor at the same time).
I got the Chocolate, Banana and Vanilla. I like them all much better than I like Stevia (which I've tried in the NOW and Sweetleaf brands- incl. the French Vanilla Stevia and the flavored drops). You can still taste a little bitterness but it doesn't ruin the food you put it in; you can actually taste the choc, or banana, or vanilla flavor. :thumb: A little goes a looong way- I use 1/4 tsp or less.

:yeahthat: Depending on what flavors you get (ex. not cookie dough but dutch chocolate fudge), the flavor is SUPER strong.

A heaping tablespoon! :faint:
The most I've used for a cup of coffee is about 1/2 tsp. and even then that was a little much.
The premium banana flavors and the premium chocolate flavors I've found to be extremely strong.

It's been months since I've ordered from TP. But my last order was 50% wpi, 25% casein, and 25% egg protein. Flavorless. Then I just bought the flavor packs. Worked out fine.

the problem is likely im not using the premimum (avoiding the artifical swtner) so i think it's the natural, like the PP that weak.

They have premium natural flavors. Not sure what the ingredients are (maybe you can email them) but if they say they're natural they shouldn't contain aspartame. I've got the Premium Natural Chocolate and it's good :thumb:

Ok, here is my review on the flavor packs
Premium chocolate - I don't like it so much. It tastes a little off to me. I much, much prefer my chocolate stevia powder :yum:
Natural Banana - it was ok. I added some of the flavor to my chocolate protein powder. I still need to try adding it to my oatmeal loaf, but I have a bunch of loaves already made sitting in the freezer so that will have to wait.
Premium Bananas n' Cream - this is really strong compared to the natural flavor. I actually tossed the first batch because I added wayyyy too much :yucky: Again, just ok for me.
So basically they were just so-so and I didn't love them.
Ok so I'm going to order the sample pack (even though shipping is $10.49- almost twice as much as the pack! :ban:). As a final review, which 5 flavors would be the best? Sohee? Cathie?
And again- this is protein powder not just flavorings, correct?

I've only tried the chocolate, vanilla and banana protein powders. I thought the chocolate and vanilla were good. I just would like the chocolate to be a bit more chocolately, that's why I add some chocolate stevia power.
The flavor packs I tried were just meh to me. But, I still haven't tried the banana flavoring in my oatmeal loaf yet because I still have some made loaves already in the freezer that I'm finishing up first and I haven't felt like griding anymore oatmeal yet

I think Sohee is the one to ask. they were just eh, to me too.

OK, I'm going to go ahead and assume that you mean Natural Premium flavors, since those are the only sample packs I can find.
I would get:
Chocolate
Vanilla
Banana
Chocolate Banana
Strawberry Banana
No hesitation. Orange? That just sounds gross. I have strawberries n' cream and it's just okay but tastes like pepto if you put even a little too much, so I wouldn't recommend the strawberry.
