I'm looking to find a new gynecologist right now. It's coming up on that good ol' annual time soon (). Since it's been a while since I've looked for a new doc, I was curious as to what everyone else does/did when looking for a new doc.

Do you go by friends' recommendations? Random choosing in the yellow pages? AMA reports?

I found mine (about a year and a half ago) in the yellow pages. I was specifically looking for a female doctor, at a women's healthcare center.

The only woman available, at that time (who would take new patients within a reasonable time-frame) wasn't a Doctor, rather a Nurse Practitioner (NCRP?). But I really like her. Better than any Gyn I've ever had.

After I scheduled the appointment, I was still sorta feeling the need to shop around a bit for someone else. But then I went online to register and fill out all their necessary forms... such a nice feature to be able to do all that in advance!!!!! I was sold by that feature, alone! (I hate sitting in doctor's offices filling out tons of new-patient info.) Then I became even more comfortable after checking out the rest of their website...

Each of their doctors and practitioners had his/her profile posted there, along with photo, resume' and complete portfolio. I just got a very good overall feeling about the clinic and about her. She had a very impressive, extensive history in the field - great credentials and references. And my instincts were right.

I like asking a friend/coworker (someone who's opinion you can trust). I've done this twice in this exact situation and was VERY glad I did. I saw a nurse practitioner on the first referral and really liked her and my current gyn md is great -- very laid back, she used to be a physical therapist, but then went back to get her MD.

I, too, ask friends for recommendations. Second to that I've used this resourse. I plug in the info and then check to see if the names that come up are on my health plan.

I work with doctors (I'm a medical devices sales rep), and they generally know who the best ones are in the area. Also be other friends and family recommendations as well.
