View Full Version : Mirena IUD
My doctor is recommending that I get a Mirena IUD (progesterone releasing) to help combat my migraines and extremely heavy periods. Has anyone had any experience with this?

I don't, but you have my sympathies on both accounts. I get migraines too, and I went through a period when my periods were so heavy it was scary, and used to last over two weeks as well.
When I told my family doctor about what was going on with my periods he suggested the possibility of putting me on the Mirena, but also referred me to a gynecologist at the same time. It turned out I had a freakin' huge uterine fibroid that was causing my insane periods. He removed it and at the same time gave me an endometrial ablation for my endometriosis.
Now my periods last three days and I barely bleed at all. :D

Thanks, Smuggie! :yippee: to your success!!!!
My gyno tells me my fibroids are inoperable and I have already been through several endometrial ablations. Aparently, my pituitary gland is secreting too much estrogen due to the tumor, which is why they want to do the Mirena. Been researching side effects, but was hoping to talk with someone who has already used it. Preferrably also in the fitness industry.

From what I've read there are few side effects with the Mirena.
You have a tumor on your pituitary gland?

Hey, B, shouldn't you move this thread to Health and Beauty?

Guess that would be a better place...not really mindless banter, is it...:p

They don't want to go that route at the moment. Too invasive. It has stopped growing, so they are hoping that it is not necessary. Symptoms did get better for a while, but are returning, so I am scheduled for another MRI. We'll see what that brings...

And what are your symptoms?
And what are your symptoms?
Migraines, loss of peripheral vision, menstrual disorders, hormonal imbalance, lactation, memory loss, nausea, fatigue, dry skin, constipation, mood swings, depression, decreased libido , intolerance to cold...I think that's it... They think my hypothyroid condition may have been caused by it as well.
Oh, yeah, a recent development, some bone density issue...

Good Lord, that's one hell of a lot of issues you're dealing with. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/montagnu/confused%20and%20thinking%20smilies/hollywoodblink.gif

Yeah, it's been a real roller coaster ride! Especially for my poor husband .
I have come to terms with this stuff. I am now looking to focus my energies on more positive things, my family, my beautiful boys and getting back into fitness. Being on this board has been inspirational. As I read about other people who have had more difficult issues to deal with than me and all they have accomplished, I know I can do it too.
If I can have medication that alleviates my symptoms, great. But I don't want to be placed on a protocol that will add to my difficulties. Been there. Done that. Would like to move on.

I agree that changing your focus is a good start. The more you focus on the good things in your life the more good you experience.

I have the Mirena, and adore it. I felt pretty level on it compared to being on other hormonal birth control. I spotted, like barely needing a panti liner if that, for 5 weeks and then I never had a period until I had removed. Not that you're looking to get pregnant, but I was pregnant 6 weeks after having it removed, so obviously no complications there.
Getting it put in is about 5 seconds of OMG pain... described as a little pinch my OB, but I wanted to kick her in the face for lying to me afterwards. Taking it out though- didn't even feel it!

Any side effects?
Aside from the initial spotting, I don't really feel like I had any side effects. I prepared for my first figure contest with ease. No weight gain or bloating- I didn't have trouble losing weight. I didn't have mood swings like I would on other birth controls, and possibly less mood swings then when I'm off birth control, since I didn't really have a TOM. I felt "normal" minus the PMS that happened every month prior to when I got it.

Thanks! Sounds like you had a positive experience. What I was hoping to hear ;)

I have no experience with this, but I remember another thread about this stuff. I think it was labeled IUD. Maybe you can run a search and find it.
Good luck with your decision.

Thanks! I did run a search, but didn't find one. :dope: Will try again.
