I was just wondering if Splenda is okay to use. The nutrition info is all zeroes... I guess I was wondering if it has any effect on your blood sugar levels or if it could possibly be used by the body in any way.

Input?

I sure hope it's ok... I've been known to eat it straight from the packet in "emergency" situations

IMO - it is what it is.

It's a chemical that appears to be safe in reasonable doses

Chemicals are kind of weird to me, so I learned to love stevia. I guess I lost trust in the FDA a while back.

Just remember that there are ~ 4calories per packet.....and overusing it can add up!

I use Splenda, but I find that it leaves an aftertaste for a VERY long time. With other aspartame sweeteners, I can wash the after taste away with a drink of water, but for some reason, Splenda seems to coat the inside of my mouth for HOURS. Yuk.

Really?? I find that Splenda is the only artificial sweetener that doesn't have a disgusting aftertaste. I guess everyone's tastebuds are different!

Really? I bought it in the big bag (actually, I'm cheap so I bought the wal-mart kind, I think it's called "Altern"...) and it says 0 calories.

In any case, I don't use that much. Just a sprinkle here and there to kill my sweet cravings.

interesting how we all notice different aftertastes... I definitely notice something with Splenda as soon as the big initial rush of sweetness fades I notice a faint chemical aftertaste on the middle to back part of my tounge. Not enough to keep me away :p

Yup, that's what I get. Interesting how different everyone's tastebuds are. It won't stop me frolm using it, but I've cut WAYYYY back. I made protein pancakes the other day with about 1/5 of what is called for the recipe, and they were even better.

I have no idea. I didn't even read it.

I guess you don't know Mercola has a rep as a nutbar.

Kristy was being facetious when she posted her comment and I was just playing along. ;)

I've tried a few sweeteners. I think Splenda's the best so far. No problem with the aftertaste.

They are allowed to say O is it is actually less than 5 calories. I found myself getting into trouble with the bags of splenda in the past. Bagged spelnda and SF syrup was adding just to much calories to my week.

Just don't assume it's free and you'll be fine.

Yet Kristy= facetious quite often. :p

Mercola is a nut. Most of his articles are based on scare tactics and very little scientific evidence, or poorly done studies.

This guy, Shane Ellison, also seems to lack credibility to me. That article you linked, which he wrote, claims that the sweet taste of artificial sweeteners raises insulin levels. Here is a study which shows otherwise, and is reassuring to me about the safety of moderate doses of Splenda:

J Am Diet Assoc. 2003 Dec;103(12):1607-12.
Lack of effect of sucralose on glucose homeostasis in subjects with type 2 diabetes.
Grotz VL, Henry RR, McGill JB, Prince MJ, Shamoon H, Trout JR, Pi-Sunyer FX.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of 3-months' daily administration of high doses of sucralose, a non-nutritive sweetener, on glycemic control in subjects with type 2 diabetes. DESIGN: A multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study, consisting of a 6-week screening phase, a 13-week test phase, and a 4-week follow-up phase. SUBJECTS/SETTING: Subjects with type 2 diabetes (age range 31 to 70 years) entered the test phase of this study; 128 subjects completed the study. The subjects were recruited from 5 medical centers across the United States and were, on average, obese. INTERVENTION: Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either placebo (cellulose) capsules (n=69) or 667 mg encapsulated sucralose (n=67) daily for the 13-week test phase. All subjects blindly received placebo capsules during the last 4 weeks of the screening phase and for the entire 4-week follow-up phase. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose, and fasting serum C-peptide were measured approximately every 2 weeks to evaluate blood glucose homeostasis. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance using repeated measures. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the sucralose and placebo groups in HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, or fasting serum C-peptide changes from baseline. There were no clinically meaningful differences between the groups in any safety measure. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that, similar to cellulose, sucralose consumption for 3 months at doses of 7.5 mg/kg/day, which is approximately three times the estimated maximum intake, had no effect on glucose homeostasis in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, this study showed that sucralose was as well-tolerated by the study subjects as was the placebo.
