I've read a lot of books about types of diets, and most recently have been reading a bunch about paleo/primal nutrition. (Loren Cordain, Primal Body/Primal Mind, Mark's Daily Apple, Nina Planck, Michael Pollan, etc.) I have also read the works of Sally Fallon, Mary Enig and Gary Taubes. ... Many of these authors espouse a grain-free diet, and some support the low-carb diets that are so popular.

Now, some of the stuff I learned - about the evils of processed foods, ultra-pasteurization, etc., - I support and eat accordingly. I'm on the fence about grains - particularly whole grains - and roots.

I wonder what everyone thinks about these concepts? I know that ultimately weight gain/loss is about calories, but healthy eating takes on a different meaning when grains/root veggies are removed.

I have been eating this way for several weeks and do NOT miss grains in the least. I have a ton of energy as well....

I'm continuing this way of eating for my next show. I have The Primal Blueprint and love it... although I am doing way more cardio than is primally recommended.

In a nutshell I eat a lot of fat, moderate protein, tons of veggies, a cpl fruit servings and ZERO grains/day.

My blog (below in siggy) has some info on it....

Thanks, Patricia. I see we're in the same loop... What do you do post-workout? How has the diet altered your body composition, if at all? Are you calories higher/lower?

Post workout?

I'm going for fat loss and have realized that pwo carbs are not necessary...

I just eat when I'm hungry.... same as any other meal.

I can tell a slight difference in my body...although I sat around on a bad ankle for a couple of weeks.

As far as calories I'm really not counting..I'm just keeping track of portion sizes so I can adjust from there in the future.

This post is my 'plan' roughly (except I just changed my training to include 45 min cardio 6 mornings a week, started muay thai 2x a week...everything is different now with that...)

I dropped dairy and all fruits except berries, apples, and cherries though.

I will say that it is very very easy eating this way. I measure now because I have a set goal/time frame. But you really don't have to. You just gotta make sure you don't over do the fats...I did that for a while.

Also, today's blog is what I ate today...I'd like not to have any protein powder meals...but was pretty busy.

will love to see how ya'll do.

I think grains arent much necessary (for anyone) but roots would likely be a part of my diet should i ever completely cut grains out. The closest anyone eats to nature is likely the healthiest.

I've done LC and dont got the super energy that many get.

It's pretty, well zero, low grain carbs..but I still eat a ton of veggies (I literally have 2 bell peppers--green and red or orange-- at night for snack with spicy mustard) and about 40g carbs from fruit, plus any bit of carbs in the 3-4 servings of nuts or avocados I have per day.

What brought you to this conclusion?

What brought you to this conclusion?

Me not noticing a negative difference without them/ noticing a faster rate of fat loss without them.

My last show I held onto muscle and got super lean (no anabolics) with zero pwo meals. My pwo meal was whatever was next. Often it was protein powder and almonds a cpl hrs later.

And yet, isn't it well established that the pwo window is the best time to consume carbs? best in terms both of protein synthesis and insulin sensitivity?

... I'm on the fence. Tons of people have gotten lean and healthy eating whole grains. Also, I live in Japan and rice hasn't seemed to hurt anyone here, and people eat lots of it. As they also do in SE Asia.

Exactly. But, 25g carbs of oats does not fill me up...I'm still hungry. Now 25g worth of veggies...bring it on. I just don't feel like I'm dieting eating this way.
