Don't know if this is the proper subsection so I posted this here....

I'm 2 years post menopausal. I've lost some bone density but I'm still well within normal limits. Obviously I don't want to lose any more.

I'm taking 2,000 mg of calcium with Vitamin D (I think the latter is 400mg) a day in addition to other supplements/vitamins (and have been for the past year or 2).

I also weight train about 4-5 days a week (split body?) to preserve as much muscle as possible while I try to lose fat (calorie deficit).

Is it possible, without medication, to build back some of that bone density? or is it a lost cause as my doctors suggests?

Any weight bearing exercise will help to increase bone density. Although, I'm not sure how much that decreases as a person progresses in age.

I believe once you hit menopause the actual laying down of new bone stops. But you are certainly doing the right things to maintain and strengthen what you have!

I saw a show today about kids getting enough calcium growing up because once you hit 21 you have 'grown' all the bone that you are going to have for your life and anything you do after that is focused on preserving what you have. I'll see if I can find a link - it was on Discovery Health.

Here is a link to what the show talked about - you have 90% of the bone you are going to have by age 19 so I suppose that means you can increase it, but not by a lot.
