View Full Version : Possibly a stupid question....

Oatmeal is a clean food because it's a whole grain, right? So it has more fiber, takes longer to break down and is lower glycemic (if you care) than, say, flour or something. So if you grind up oats, like people do for pancakes or muffins, is it still better than flour?

I have asked myself the same question.

If you have a food processor you can grind them up until they are reduced to the consistency of regular flour. Takes effort but well worth it. You can substitite it for wheat flour when baking, makes for a much "cleaner" recipe.

most "health food" stores will sell ground oats. if you can get the same stuff it'll be a lot easier then grinding your own.

They're hard to find here. I did find some at one of the local health food stores but the price was absolutely outrageous!
So, I figured a little bit of effort with a food processor ain't so bad after all. :)

What about 100% whole wheat flour? Isn't that clean?

I use the blender to do about a cup at a time. It is fast if you only need a bit for, say, protein pancakes.

You can also use a coffee grinder. It works great for small amounts.

Me too. The blender works great. I wouldn't spend the money on oat flour (which is pricey at my local grocery) when I can buy old fashioned oats for $1/(big tub? or whatever you call that container they come in) and grind them in the blender.
