Do any of you account for these. I am talking about things like sugar free syrup and jello, mustard, gum, etc. While each item is very low in calories they do add up. I would say I would add about 50 a day + a pack and a half of gum. That adds up to be a lot.

Q. Do you reduce calories total by an arbitrary amount to make up for incidental calories, forget about it, or calaculate these things???

I know I go crazy chewing lots of gum and I should count it but I don't.

Me to. Very much addicted. A pack and a half is not uncommon. My secretary jokes that I think it is one of the food groups :(

Anyway, that is like 60 calories a pack so that is alarming. It would be easier to lower calories than lose the gym...tough perhpas not wise.

I don't chew gum or use sweet condiment type things (I do use mustard, vinegar, soy sauce), but I would guess that if you ARE chewing a lot of gum or using a lot of SF jam or syrup that yes, I would count those (at least a rough estimation included in your daily totals) :)

If I think it will end up being 50 calories plus, I'll count it.

Like you just said, it can add up at the end of the week.

I'm aware of what condiments I use and what their nutritional info is and while I don't count *all* of it, I am use them very sparingly and tend to keep a mental tally. I don't ever use enough to count, though.

I don't count stuff like gum and mustard and if I'm using a SF "calorie free" product like syrup...I don't count it if I'm just using a bit, like less than a tbsp....but anything more than that I do count it cause it's not actually calorie free. Then again, if I am using some like SF syrup I'm usually cheating and not counting things anyway, lol. I always count dressings though.

You consider SF syrup as a cheat? I eat it everyday with my cottage cheese. :(

YIKES. I use the walden farms SF syrup, it has no cals/no carbs. Im not sure how they get away with that, but if trying to track them, how do you enter them when the bottle is of no help/lists a breakdown.
Yikes!

Maltodextrin is sugar.

I know. How are they allowed to post NO to carbs/sug?

Guess it is the same like transfats? Per serv. ? That is what confuses me.

Other than not using the product, how do you track it?

I used there products for such a long time (before I found the O2 board) I loved the fact that they had nothing in them...but I was thinking, there has to be a catch!!

I think I need to really work at cutting this stuff out and really need to work on the gum issue.

Please tell me diet soda reallys is free!!!

They can say zero if it is less than 5.

Diet soda has around 4 per 8 oz. Equal, splenda, etc., all around between 2-4 per packet.

Strong chick - do you count them?

strongchick
05-04-2006, 02:35 AM
heck no

That's obsessive to me. Unless you're a competitor there is no reason to count splenda.

Just ask because I think my incidentals are getting out of control - mostly gum though. I am going to try AGAIN to cut back and as of today am done with sugar free syrup for a while :(

Geez - with that much sugar free, gum, and diet pop, I'd be more concerned about the amount of chemical sweeteners I was consuming, much less calories!

But that's just me.

I think there's a point where you can become really anal about what you put in your mouth, counting each calorie down, but that seems more appropriate perhaps for a competitor on a cutting diet. For me, until I get my ass in gear to compete, I wouldn't worry about gum or very low calorie items. There's so much other stuff to focus on.

It's not really about being a competitor. There's nothing different b/w a competitor and a non competitor outside of the fact that the former needs to get leaner than the latter traditionally.

They still both are trying to lose fat and if something is preventing a person from progressing and losing fat, their set up needs to be reexamined. If they are progressing at a satisfactory rate, then there's really no need to fix what isn't broken.

Yeah, I think I just treat these items like "what the hell" I have one diet soda a day but am ALWAYS chewing gum. This is a left over habit from an ED a long time ago when I lived on gum and coffee. :(

Anyway, the cost and the chemicals can't be good even if they are not hindering progress - though incidentals do make a diet easier to stick to. BUT, I figure if I am eating organic chicken why am I pounding SF chemicals. Anyway, I am going to make a concious effort to cut back.

I also chew lots of sf gum and I don't count it in my calorie totals. It's weird that I count sf jam and syrup though, even if it's just 10 calories! Yeah, maybe it's obsessive, but it really does add up at the end of the week.
