5. Calories Count

You don’t have to count them, but they do count. And while we are at it, here is a argument I have been dying to dissect.

You know how you see the gurus talk about how a calorie isn’t a calorie? Well they are right – it isn’t. Still, you know when they always bring up, “what do you think a body would look like if they had only 1200 calories a day in soda?” This is a bs comparison because no one who researches nutrition would ever suggest to do that. Anyone worth their grain of research suggests at least a moderate marco distribution with focus on protein, fats, and carbs.

Still, I am here to tell you that the person on the 1200 calories soda diet, would lose fat. They might end up getting sick, feel like crap and eventually lose some muscle – but fat they would lose. There are countless studies and anecdotal stories of people losing weight on junk food, fast food and even The Twinkie Diet. In the end, the calories count, but you should make wise decisions with your use of them.

4. If you can’t tell me what your eating, I can’t help you

The majority of the messages that land in my inbox, are people describing their training to the most extreme of detail. Then they say something like “As for my diet, I eat pretty clean.” That means jack. It means nothing. All that means to me is you are subscribing to nutritional dogma and it isn’t even working (or else you wouldn’t be sending me a message).

Newsflash – You can gain fat, stall, or make little to no progress on a low carb/no refined sugar diet.

All the training in the world isn’t going to change what your diet is doing to your results. Maybe you have been undereating too long and adapted. Maybe you are overeating beyond your knowledge. Whatever it is, results are in those details that you casually mention in the last line, of your 3 page email novel.

3. Train For The Goal – Not Like An “Athlete”

I am not a coach of a team. Most of the athletes I have worked with have been to help aid in their mobility and body composition for sport. Funny enough I have worked more than most online strength coaches claim, or those wanking about techniques they have never tested in the field - but that is neither here no there.

What training and dieting program would I least likely apply to the majority of the population? An athlete.

Do you know what population of client generally has the worst design around it? Athletes.

Did you know most athletes at the top level don’t do their specific sport training daily. Did you know what rest is more important to real coaches? Did you know that women are doing things so wrong, that at this pace they are going to see themselves step further and further back while collecting more injuries?

Most of you have no clue what it takes to take care of yourself, let alone achieve high level athletics because you are to busy still trying to drop the 20-30 pounds you’ve been carrying around for the last 4 years. Athletes need food and they need recovery. They need conditioning, progressive overloads and challenges. This has jack to do with fat loss. You are going to end up is injured and deflated (and usually still fat).

Train for you goals.

2. Most of the time, you’re paranoid

I can’t blame you. It’s a wonder I am not huddled up in corners from all the things I read on a daily basis for my job. In fact, I had a moment few weeks ago, where I really questioned if the things I had to expose myself to in order to do my job was worth it anymore. I decided that someone has to do it and be objective.

At the end of the day, you let unrealistic and unreasonable fear get to you and guide you to your decisions. We are all guilty of it on one level or another. Don’t think I am not affected by the unreasonable in life. Sometimes you can’t help it.

What I do have a problem with is the “misery loves company” attitude and those trying to drag others down with them. Just because you are “they” are afraid of a non-organic potato chip, doesn’t mean you have to be.

1. It Depends

I got a “complaint” the other day that too many of my answers had the phrase “it depends” in it. I won’t lie, my initial reaction was a obscene gesture from a not so pristine girl. A stranger may have thought I was a victim of Tourettes.

Here is the thing…

You should be happy I take into account the variables of a situation to make a better and informed decision. You should be happy, I am not some lazy guru hustler who reads one abstract on pubmed and thinks they have all the answers. You should be happy, I don’t select my clients based on who is going to fit best into my non-changing mold. You should be happy, I do the thing the other guy isn’t willing to do – know who you are.

The best lesson I can give you? What works for them may not work for you. Don’t get caught up in the hype or what you think you should be doing. Look at your situation and make it work for you.
