Can that be substituted in place of top round (i.e. is it as lean?)

Not quite as lean, but just adjust your totals. I don't think it's hugely different, but top round is the leanest cut.

I just buy lean or extra lean ground beef. Is this bad?

it is not as lean as regular beef and I wouldn't use it as a main source of protein in a meal. I love ground turkey, but again...the fat:protein ratio does not fit my meal macro's so....I usually measure out enough ground turkey to meet my fat requirements for the meal and then make up the difference for protein w/ egg whites.

I usually eat it once a week or less since I usually eat tuna or skinless chicken. Good to know it's not actually bad for me. :)

Leah, have you ever had ground turkey breast - I can only find it at some stores - and they never have an abundance of it - as I imagine it gets purchased right away - but the fat content is really low....you could mix that w/ the regular ground turkey....just an idea.

Nope...it's not bad for you....you just have to fit it in to your macros.

I just buy turkey/chicken eggs, incubate them, raise them, slaughter them, then grind them myself. Same with beef embryos.

I usually just use the turkey breast.

They make nice tender burgers if you add some parsley, chopped jar garlic and some of the liquid) grill. Careful to not over cook them.. Since they are so lowfat, they can get dry.

hahahahaa

I choke beef down unless it's fillet mignon slow cooked. or a nice juicy hamburger. I usually like red meat, but it just does't taste so good or have a good texture a couple days down the road no matter what I do with it.

Actually ground turkey breast can be higher in fat than ground lean meat: the ground turkey often includes dark meat, which is fattier than ultra lean red meat.

I think that's why ground turkey breast was mentioned as opposed to just ground turkey in general.

Huh, thats interesting. I dont know why I never realized that, duh, ground chicken doestn mean ground chicken breast!

Beef has been big time grossing me out lately. If its fresh off the bbq I can eat it. But reheating... :finger:

Jennie-O brand has extra lean ground turkey (all breast, 1.5g fat). I hope Leah and others can find it- it is sooo good. I eat it 4x per week, chicken, fish or extra lean (4% fat) ground beef the rest of the time.

I gave up beef, but love bison. Ground chicken breast is awesome for burgers, meatloaf, etc.
