Okay, hubby and I haven't used pills, shots, condoms or anything of that nature for the past 8 yrs  . I have no idea which method is best. I, at one time, had the Norplant and loved it. Is it still available?

What other methods are there?

Outside of IUD, screaming "pull it out, pull it out", and just not doing it, I believe you covered them all. I believe Norplant is still available although I have not seen anyone using it in quite some time.

The best is the one you will remember to use and has the least amount of side effects. I wouldn't recommend the shot because it basically works by putting your body i psuedo-menopause so that might make your effort to lean out way harder than it already is. I take a low dose pill and have never experienced any side effects. I hope you figure out the best thing for you.

I have a plain old IUD and love it, yes more cramping and heavier flow, and it hurt like a son of a gun when my doc pulled out the old one to put in the new one. But this second one I find to be much better, I hardly ever get cramping now. I used to be on the pill and I hate feeling like I'm about to lose it and start crying all the time. I tried all sorts so it just wasn't one type or hormone level. I like being drug free much better.

I've tried everything under the sun, I've been experimenting with different brands, types since I was 14 to try and regulate my period now to control the birth. Keep in mind I'm hyper sensative and if they have side effects I will get them.

Patch just about killed me, I was bed ridden for 3 days I was so sick, tried Nuva ring not a fan and made me sick. Pill meh, I think I used ortho tri, I'm currently on progestin only bc pills, the only down side is you HAVE to take them at the sime time every day, for me they've been the best option. When my insurance kicks in I'm looking into a no hormone IUD it's called ParaGard I think, since it can stay in for a long period, up to ten years and I'm in no hurry to have children it seems a great solution.

For the record, the Today Sponge is back on the market. I haven't tried it, but it's another option.

I can't help it. It's my motivation to get thru the next 4 weeks and 2 days of comp prep. (Not that I'm counting.. ) :thunder:

I leave it in for 4 weeks, take it out and immediately replace. No period, no pregnancy, no muss, no fuss. Love it. You're supposed to take it out after 3 weeks, have a period, then put a new one in. As soon as I learned you could leave it in, I went for it. :D

I plan to get this done, but can't afford it right now. This is MY preferred method, though!

Less expensive for the men.... Just a thought... You know with them it's just snip-snatch and it's done. However for women, well, a little bit more complicated, need to stay in the hospital, need many check with a specialist surgeon, etc.

Hey, if you went through all the excruciating pain of putting two babies into world, well you have done you work... Maybe the men could do a little bit of their part in that sense?? ;)

low dose bcp (alesse)...love it...never any problems...and bonus: no more periods! just a little spot when I choose to have one....dr. gave the green light to take 3 consecutive packs for just 4 periods per year. But seriously, you can't even call it a period

Hey!
I had Norplant!!

I got it taken out when I got my tubes tied, about 2 1/2 years ago. Thank goodness- doc told me he had a hard time getting it out. (under general anesthesia)

I used it, wasn't right for me but I can answer some of the questions.

Can have same side effects as the pill.

Normal cost of your copay or planned parenthood will give it to you for free if you qualify.

You put it in and take it out, just need to stick your finger up there hook it in the hoop and pull it out

Doesn't effect intercourse and neither of you should feel it if it's in far enough

I was on the pill before tried this because it has a more steady release of hormones

It's not a barrier, it's just a rubber like circle I'll see if I can find a picture

I didn't stay on it because I struggled with the side effects as I do with anything hormone based but for ease of use there isn't anything better.

I was on BCP for years, and also made JD use condoms until we were ready to have a baby-I figured using 2 forms would be like Fort Knox protection. I didn't go back on the pill after London was born b/c I didn't want it built up in my system again, so we used condoms until we started trying again. They suck and we both hate them. I have to have a c-section when we have another baby, so they'll tie my tubes then, and JD is also getting fixed. I've known a few people that still got pregnant after having their tubes tied, so I don't want to take any chances.

I looove it. I took BCP for years and always had something going on. But NuvaRing has not affected me negatively at all. That being said, everyone is different, so it's a case of trying it to see if it works for you.
- The side effects are the same as BCP, because it is the exact same thing (essentially) but in a different physical form. Personally, I did not have ANY side effects even though I had experienced them on many different BCPs.
- It's covered by my health plan, so I only pay about $8/month, but it's the same cost as BCP.
- You put it in yourself, just take it out of the little silver pouch and pop it in there! :p It's very flexible, you just pinch it in the middle and insert. It's very comfortable. Once it's up there, you can't feel it all, just like a tampon. SOMETIMES, it will slip out a bit. I noticed this when I first started using it. That can be remedied by just making sure it's in place when you're in the shower (or whenever). It's very easy to get it in and take it out. You might be more comfortable changing it in the shower.
- It doesn't affect sex at all. I can't tell, my SO can't tell. If it does bug you, you can actually remove it for up to 3 hours, and then just put it back in when you're done.
You don't have to remember to take a pill every day. I just mark it on my calendar to remind myself when to take it out. It may be more effective because it is a steady stream of hormones, but currently it has the same effectiveness as the pill (~98%) I really recommend trying it. Worst case scenario, you don't like it, you just go off it!
