View Full Version : Is it just me?

Whenever I need to expend a lot of energy - eg lifting really heavy or doing more advanced moves in rockclimbing - I can't help making noises like "HURGHH!", "OOFF!" and "URGHHH!"
I get some really funny looks. Another reason why I'm switching to a "regular" gym as soon as my contract at my current (women's) gym expires.
It's getting embarassing.
Please tell me I'm not the only one.
Or maybe it is just me... :(
A lot of people do it! Most martial arts have you do some sort of gutteral noise when you hit, as it is supposed to focus your strength. It's only silly when it's extravagently loud and prolonged. I think most women just don't know about straining because they aren't accustomed to lifting heavy things. I hear guys do it all the time, and I do it too.
I growl when boys come near me...does that count?

Nope, you're not the only one. At least you know you're still breathing! I guess this is one of the advantages of training at home. The only people who might hear me are my DH and kids. But normally my music is so loud, no one could hear me anyway. :)

You're not alone. People don't look at me anymore, especially if I'm in the rack.

My husband would love you all. He was always teasing me that I don't make enough noise when I was lifting. I'm trying, right now though I mostly blow air out loudly . . . a vast improvement but still a work in progress. . . sometime I'll be growling with the best of you. ;)

Really? Rude.
You're not alone at all, I make a lot of noise. My mom has even labelled me a grunter when I lift. I don't care about the noise I make as long as I am not one of the people that spit on the mirrors during a set. :p

Come the last 5 reps of any exercise... I am grunting like a pig in pain! I know it's psychological but it makes me feel like I really am working hard...sucker for validation what can I say!

I'm just loud...pin pulls, deadlifts, crashing my squat bar back into the hooks...people just get used to it.

You train in a hardcore gym, so people probably don't even notice.

Even the hardest core guy looked over at me on Saturday when I flung the trap bar at the unuseable cage
Actually, we have a few "mainstream" people come in, they're easy to freak out.

I don't throw my weights around. That just annoys me at 5:00 a.m. However I do make small noises. A lot of heavy breathing and a little grunting. But I'm cute, so it's all ok.

Note to self: Squeal like a pig, growl at boys, fling weights around. Check. :funny:

I fling weights around. It is a new thing. I used to be quiet. Not anymore. :flex:
I don't drop my weights but I am kinda noisy when I deadlift :flex:

I've gotten more vocal as time has passed, usually little pep talks but now the grunting. There is actually a rule against it at one of my gyms, something about unneccessary noise, should be interesting if I get into trouble
I grimace more than I grunt but sometimes near the end of a set, I will grunt a bit. But then again, I have my headphones on and can't really hear myself so maybe I am grunting loader than I think!

Speaking of grimacing in addition to grunting, there's this really retarded chick at my gym who does both - all while lifting 10 lbs. DBs.
It's quite amusing to watch her.
