View Full Version : bad squat advice

function

The way I always was taught to squat is to go ass back slowly down, and then explode up while keeping a straight back. I know my form isnt perfect and I am trying to improve it. But when I asked the personal trainers at my gym, they suggested I go for reps of 15-20 and told me to stick my pelvis out throughout the excercize "to protect myself". Now I am pretty sure that it is a good idea to keep the abdominal area tight while squatting, but you have to be kidding me with this advice. Was any of this advice worthwhile at all (i'm guessing not) and why are these people getting paid?

What do you mean "stick your pelvis out?" Do you mean out in back or out in front. I am thinking out in front, and I don't see how you could do a squat and be sticking your pelvis out in front. Did they say what you are supposedly protecting yourself from?

 Stick your pelvis out while squatting down?
If it tried to "explode up" with a heavy barbell on my back, I would fall back on it and snap my neck.

I'm not sure what they mean by this. For explosive lifts, I can get power by engaging more hip but I don't think this is a safety thing. I think they're confusing some terms.

yup, i really have no faith in the personal trainers at any gym i have ever worked out in. from now on, i ignore them completely unless they prove first they KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING.

Don't hold your breath.

I've only seen one PT at my gym who knows what a full squat is in all of the 7.5 years I've been a member there.

Nope. My gym's cool like that :D
But if you need a bed, mine's huge. And if you stay out late, I'll be out of it for you to have it to yourself on weekdays

Oh. Well. In that case...I'm sure the guy who propositions me would go for you, too! And if you come to bed early...well, I'm pretty straight, but I'm definitely up for snuggling ;)

How about spooning?

All righty, then. We shall snuggle and spoon together.

Or, if you prefer, we can spoon and then snuggle.

We can decide when it becomes necessary...for now, you're much too far north! And much as I'd like to see you, I'd recommend not coming in August...perhaps a winter break from your frozen part of the world?

Yes. It's quite bad, I can't do it properly. Certainly not a Do-It-Yourself-er on my own house, it just makes me upset that I'm alone. And I'm not so financially well-off that I can buy somebody to do stuff for me. I'm just bad at it, and I shouldn't be doing it. I need a man.
