I'm a pale white ass.
I've done the bottled tans, but I'm curious about the spray tans...where you go to a salon, strip down, and get sprayed.
Has anyone gotten it done? How long does it last? What's a decent $$?

Neutrogena Micro Mist is a good at home one to try. I'm naturally pale as snow too and I think it's great. Never streaky or orangey. (I know you were asking about the booths, but I don't have .02 to offer on those ;) )

I did mystic tan once for fun with my mom... they had three levels of tan and we picked the palest one since we were so white to start with (haha see day one of honeymoon in avatar) and also didn't want to look like an oompa too! :D
I think it turned out good- did stain my shirt a little, but everyone I asked for an honest answer said I looked "lightly sun kissed".
My only gripe was it didn't last more than three days though.
Edit: I think it was about 20 bucks, but it was a first time special.

I've done it several times. I'm super pale and use mystic tan #2 and it worked well. It didn't stain my clothes after at all. It is kinda weird standing in that booth naked and having all that stuff spraying out at you - freaks me out a bit.
It lasted about 4 days for me - good for a long weekend or a weekend when you have several engagements. :)

I've done both the Mystic Tan and the airbrushing. They both came off on my clothes and if you work out on a regular basis, the sweating will cause it to come off that much faster.

I did airbrush and loved the results the first day but then it sweated off on my clothes and towel. Not to mention when you dry off after a shower, it tends to wipe off in spots.

Ladybug-
How do you keep the spray tan at home from making a mess out of your bathroom?
I've use Mystic Tan for years. I follow the directions to a "T", and have never had anything rub off on my clothes, ever, and I do lots of maintenance and get a good 7-10 days out of it.
I pay about $25 CDN.
Regaring the levels, I was told (and this could be wrong) that Levels 2 and 3 are really for larger bodies, not to make you darker. Meaning if you are huuuge, it will give you better coverage. But loading it on thicker won't make you darker, as you wipe off all residue immediatly anyway.

Fet - so do you do that at home? And it lasts that long?
The idea of going somewhere and paying money for something that only lasts a few days doesn't thrill me. Especially since I work out so much and will sweat it off faster....

I don't even know what the airbrushing thing is? How does it work?

never had it done, but the way I understand, a technician (not a machine) uses a little sprayer to airbrush the tanning solution on to your body. They can do contouring and shading in areas unlike the mystic tan that just gives you one consistent coat.

It's usually done at a tanning salon, spa, or even nail salons around here. You go in, strip down to either naked or in a bathing suit, and somebody sprays you all over with an airbrush gun. I've had it done several times and am usually happy with the results. There are different formulas out there, so you may get different color from two different places. I've also done Mystic Tan once, on the lightest level, but got really bad streaks. I don't think I held my arms correctly as it sprayed. Haven't tried that again.
I've also used the Salon Bronze gun (as seen on TV! lol) at home. It's got good initial color, but it scales off horribly after a few days. Like snakeskin.
As for not making a mess, I just spray myself in the shower, then rinse any mess off the walls and floor of the stall.

Although this is not a spray tan, I highly recommend Neutrogena tanning foam. It's a tinted mousse and it is awesome! I also like Loreal tinted sublime. They both have worked great for me and are no where near the price of mystic tan.

The Mystic Tan is in a spray booth. It comes out in a "mist", so the coverage is pretty good if you prep properly. It takes a good 4 hours to develop, so I go there wearing loose, baggy clothes, and shower 4+ hours later. In that 4 hours, no sweating, no exercise, no bathing or swimming.
Use of a really good moisturizer daily can extend the life of the tan. Ditto a good exfoliation before tanning.
Yes, it's expensive, so I usually only use it when I have a special event coming up. However, I hear melanoma can be expensive too, so I don't mind paying.
I do plan on trying the airbrush sometime. I hear they can mask cellulite and paint on a 6-pack!!

I put mine on in the tub with the shower curtain closed... seems to work great - I use a neutrogena spray.

Thanks Freckles. I just imagine an orange shower stall, but shouldn't worry too much about that happening.

I've done the spray tanning (mystic tan) with great results. It can be expensive, but a lot of times tanning salons have promotions and deals going on, especially in the summer. Keep your eyes out for those.
I am very pale and skin cancer is in my family, so it's really nice to get a natural looking "tan"... something I've never been able to experience until now. :)

Sarah- I have used Mystic tan for the first time this summer and really loved it. It takes a little while to learn the little things- like how much lotion to put on your hands and feet before (so they don't turn out orange). It IS annoying to pay each time you go- but check with different places and see if they have like a 'monthly' deal. My tan place in Austin has like a 1 month mystic tan for 40 bucks. I used it about 4 times in a month and it was a lot cheaper than buying individual sessions. Let us know if you do it! :)
I did the airbrush tanning twice and didn't care for it. It took a long time, and it freaked me out standing there in my bra and underwear in front of someone I didn't know. I also tried the Mystic tan once and I really liked it-the color came out perfect-just like I looked when I used to fake bake. The shit was cold tho, and felt like ice being sprayed on me, so I think I inhaled a lot while gasping in shock. It was $20, or you could buy 2 for $30, but the closest one around here is 40 miles away, so I just get regular self tanner lotion, of which I've yet to find one I'm totally happy with.
Somebody needs to come up w/a pill to increase the melanin in your skin rather than using the sun or dye to color it.

I've never done the spray tan, but I use L'Oreal Sublime tanning gel. I usually apply 2 coats and it lasts at least a week. It is fabulous!! The color is so natural and it doesn't streak. It just wears off faster in areas that rub, like the inside of your elbows and knees.

I tried the Mystic tan before vacation to visit friends and came out orange as orange gets. UNfortunately it lasted about a week. Perhaps I did something wrong, I dunno..
