So does walking up the stairmill backwards have any more of a positive effect that just walking up it forwards? I saw two girls yesterday on them yesterday side by side chatting and walking backwards up the mill.

I wanted to roll my eyes, but decided to give them the benefit of the doubt. I am sure I do some things that people want to roll their eyes at. (but come on, I know what I am doing. :p )

If we are talking about the same thing we have at the gym, I'd break my neck if'd try to walk backwards.

I dont think many women would benefit from the stair stepper in general. Most women have horribly balled up calves from the heels that they wear all day. The last thing I have my clients do is get on something that contributes to lower leg imbalance.

Stepmill? No, I think I'd break my head.
Stairmaster...when I was in Physical Therapy school there was one PT I knew that would have people backwards on the StairMaster with the toes hanging off a bit to try to target the VMO more (for people with patellar tracking problems.) I have no idea if this actually does anything, but I would be inclined to doubt it.

I don't think they are referring to the stepper..they are talking about the stairmill, the one that moves like an escalator.Try running 60 sec sprints on that thing at level 20..DEAD.

I can't believe they could even manage this?? I'd definitely kill myself if I tried going backwards on the step mill. They must be super coordinated, so I give them credit for that even if they are stupid!

I completely agree with you Strive--the stepmill is killer to do HIIT on. I am literally drenched when I get off that thing! Why is the stair stepper bad for women?? I feel it alot in my a$$ when I do it.
