I can't give you a definitive answer, but I asked my doctor last time if high protein would be a cause for miscarriages (as I was looking for an answer to what caused mine.) He said that ancient humans ate diets high in protein and lower in carbs and were fine. He said that just recently (in the last centuries) humans have been eating more carbs than ever. Of course, he said no dieting and to make sure and get enough calories & nutrients, but that restricting processed carbs was a good idea.

pregnant women do need extra protein, 70-100 g is usually the recommended amount.

A researcher named Tom Brewer even went as far to say that a high protein diet may prevent preeclampsia. But if you think about what a baby needs to grow in the uterus, it makes sense to eat plenty of protein. The baby needs protein to make up all it's tissues etc. Our bodies can't store protein for babies to drain from us whenever they need it, so we need to have a constant supply of protein coming in to promote healthy tissue growth. Tom Brewer recommends 80-100 grams a day. I don't think going higher would cause a problem, but you should consult your OBGYN just to run it past him or her if you are concerned. You might want to check out the book What to Eat When You are Expecting or google Tom Brewer's Pregnancy Diet for more info as to why eating higher protein amounts is actually good for your baby. All you need for you and baby:

PROTEIN
DRI = 46 grams/day (g/d)
Pregnant or lactating = 71 g/d

OR

RDA = 0.8 g/ Kg of body weight/ day
Pregnant or lactating = 1.1 g of protein/Kg of body weight/ day.

Carbs are so essential for the growing fetus -- a high pro, low cho diet is definately not something you want to try while pregnant.

K, so a couple of you have said that 70-100g of protien is recommended. Well right now, I eat WAY more than that....probably 150 - 185g. I eat a ton of chicken & egg whites etc. So should I be cutting down on protein once I get preg?

if it were me, i would likely cut back on the protein to about 100g, and then replace the extra protein you normally eat with fruits/veggies/whole grains to help you meet your nutritional needs. i don't know anything about how you currently eat so it's hard to say really. i'll have to look it up in my books for you :)

For me (and I think some others have mentioned this, too) I haven't wanted as much protein pregnant - definitely in the first trimester, anything protein related made me feel barfy at the thought. When that feeling started to go away in the second trimester, I was eating protein again from my usual sources, but I wanted more carbs whereas before I was pregnant I didn't want them as often. Keep it in check, but your body will tell you what it needs to a certain extent.

Me too..I remember for the first few months the smell of chicken made me sick. I don't remember eating much those first few months, I was really puky.
