View Full Version : Full Squats or CDL's
...which one is better? If you had to choose only one to do....which one would it be?

Completely different exercises that work different muscles. I couldn't choose just one. You need both :p
My favorite? Deadlifts. Cause I think I am more built to deadlift than squat. However, squatting is great too :D

They both work quads & hams right? DL's just work upper body more? Why do you NEED both?

Why wouldn't you? What else are you going to do with your time, leg extensions?

I'm missing something....why are you so opposed to doing both?? Squats are Quad dominant...CDLs are Hammie dominant....this is like asking "which is better; Bench Press, or Pullups?"
For me they are both essential exercises. I couldn't imagine creating a program without either one of them.

I'm missing how CDL's are an "upper body" exercise...they're a full body exercise. As are squats. And I don't see why doing both wouldn't work. Not like you'd be doing both in one workout.
Okay ppl...RELAX!!!!!!!!!!!! Geez, I'm not opposed to doing both at all...except for tonight b/c I don't have much time to be in the gym, and they are both on the agenda for tonight, so I wanted to know which one I could cut.

Okay, just do whichever one you like better. And next time, choose the other one.
I can't imagine doing both with any decent weight or form in the same workout.

Not so much...maybe if you consider a PL meet a workout, and only look at the opener for the deadlift on form.

You may think it has been done (as did I when I was doing them in the same workout) but in reality, when I did them on different days, my squats have stayed the same because I always did them first, but my DLs have already gone to maxing out at 155 for 5, to 185 for 6......after 2 workouts.

Actually, they're both on the 5X6 day of Thunder's beginner's full-body workout. I did them both this morning. :D

Given what you're squatting (Chels), I give you 2months before you're out-pulling me. And I sincerely hope to hit 285 within 2months.

You know that there was a thread where Erik said he thought his sample plan had too much volume, right?

No, I missed that thread. I've been busy at work lately and haven't had much time for my Internet habits.
Must go search now.

such as..?? I use mind tricks for my bench and for my squat, but I am not comfy with the DL yet for some reason. I have been doing them forever, but I worry so darn much about form on it cuz it isn't as natural for me as the others. I don't know why....

I've used "Grip and Rip," but yes. Know where your hands and feet are supposed to go, and just dive into it and blast up. Even if blasting takes several seconds. After you've learned the basics, form isn't so bad, as long as you stop if you get the "scared cat" effect going on.

It's really the best way to get it going. It won't work for rep work obviously, but for that first pull it's the best way; especially for singles. You get the benefit of the SSC on the way down, as opposed to just sitting there at the bottom of the rep, crouched and trying to psyche yourself up.
When I do rep work (no more than 5 obviously), I'm still deadlifting from a complete pause, so it's like 5 singles. I don't just do the touch and go. I find I can ensure I'm really tight if I pause b/w each rep to double check I'm tight.

So a pause b/t reps is better than touch n go? For form purposes? We are talking 5 reps or less right?

Well, I generally don't deadlift for more than 5 reps personally, and even that feels like cardio. I think once you get pretty strong, the reps should stay down. It's more of a maximal loading movement. I think it's easier for form to break down on a CDL with more reps, than say an RDL or even a sumo deadlift. I find sumos very easy to stay in the groove, but that could be just me.
And it's a DEADlift, which to me means lifting from a dead stop. No doubt it's a bit harder as throwing in a pause lessens the effect of the SSC, but for me, it's just a better way of deadlifting. I can also take a split second to double check that everything is tight.
I think with my people I always have them pausing.

Pausing is definitely the way to go on CDLs.

Thanks! Will concentrate on pausing and keeping form tight. I was always under the assumption that touch and go was what to do. I don't do more than 5 CDLs either, and I try to go heavy on them.
I have found that since doing heavy CDLS my forearms have really got defined and bigger... Funny body part to improve from CDLS. I spose they don't hurt my ass either lol.

The trick to my max DL days:
- Lots of loud music
- Lots of stimulants
- Flip out completely
- DL = Owned

Seconded. If I get within 75-100 lbs of my max work, I'm not doing reps with it.
Though I will admit 10-rep DLs on an HST-like plan did do me well when trying to add size. But those are touch-n-go all the way.
