View Full Version : rainman deadlifts
i feel like rainman when i do my deadlifts lately. :( i'm unable to just bend down and pull. i'll take a few steps up to the bar, then some back. lift my left foot and move it an inch, do the same with my right foot...over and over again. then i'll bend down and grip the bar and wait forever trying to get my breathing right or something. then i'll stand up without having pulled the bar. i talk to myself a bit and repeat the entire sequence. what the fukk jade, pick up the damn bar!!!!!!
the only other exercises i do on deadlift day are a few sets of front squats and 2 sets of reverse lunges, but my workout now takes well over an hour. does anyone have tips to prevent this time-consuming mind fukk? thanks!
oh yeah i didn't mean to offend anyone with autism...sorry...

It is mind over matter jade. You know you can do it, you are getting better and stronger in all your lifts. Stop putting limitations on yourself that don't even exist.
easier said than done!

Why do you have this problem?
you're overthinking it.. I felt like an idiot the first time I tried deadlifts too - thinking that everyone's gonna see me doing them wrong n all.
You know how to do them.. just suck it up and do it

Did you hurt yourself doing them or something?
Try stepping up to the bar and telling yourself that it's not heavy as opposed to psyching yourself out about the weight.
I wish I had more to say to help you. :(
lazyone i'd like your abs please.

i have no idea. it's relatively recent. maybe it's because i think i'm not gonna be able to lift it or something. stupid. i hate it. so so so frustrating.
that's a good idea janey---say "light as a feather" or something gay like that maybe...

So what if you can't lift it? Will the universe end?

Deads are rather inconsequential to fail on. Plus, you're more likely to make the lift when you go down, grip, and rip it off the ground all at once...maximises the stretch reflex or whatever that's called.
good point smuggie.
jaleena--that's what i'm trying to do! just bend down and pull. maybe i'm too concerned about being perfectly in the middle. does that make sense?

im kinda the same way when it comes to my deads(just not as much as u which isn't a bad thing :D )....for me its getting mentally focused on lifting a huge amount of weight and using proper form, plus it seems like when ever its time for me to do deads a huge crowd gathers around me and folks stare while they workout.... :lyn: i think i do the same thing when im about to bench and bb row..... :train:
must be nice to be strong
i always do mine on saturday when no one is in the gym because they make so much noise and i don't want to draw attention to my fat autistic ass

Would you stop already?
Who cares what other people think anyway? I make a racket when I deadlift and I don't give a damn who's watching. :D
You just walk up to that bar and tell it "Get ready to be dominated, sucka." and rip it off the floor.

I want them back too.. they're um shy at the moment
Go light at first if you have to. I started off with the piddly preloaded bb's and worked my way up to the olympic bar with weights. Its all psychological and theres something badass about deadlifting too.. :D
Not to mention the admiring stares of the guys at the gym too *cough*

Grip 'n' rip is right, Smugs :)
Jade, everybody is loud when they deadlift. And the more plates, the louder it is. Some of the guys at my gym could wake the dead with their deads.

Not at mine, since I'm the only one there who deadlifts.

On Tuesday, the guy I was sharing the platform with was doing speed deads. With 5plates.
He was going to have me do my working sets with his warmup weight, but he jumped straight from one plate to three, so I tapped and got my own bar. I thought it was really sweet that he thought I could do that

I remember feeling very hesitant about deadlifting after I injured my back/trap or whatever the hell it was. Fear of hurting myself again I guess.... plus I felt very tired from lifting heavy for so long.
thanks for all the motivation and tips
i really really want to be to 200 by the end of the year. maybe i'm just putting too much pressure on myself and thinking too much!!!
i'll try the ole "dip and rip"
