I was a vegetarian for many years, not any longer, but I do eat tofu, edemame and tempeh several times a week. I don't see these foods mentioned very often on this forum and I wonder what your take is on soy? I know there is some controversy about the hype over soy, but I think it has benefits if eaten in moderation.

I was a vegetarian for many years too. Once I started eating meat again I said :funny: to soy products.

You will probably hear a lot of reasons not to use it---which many are very valid. However, I do incorporate it every once in a while in my diet and I have not seen or felt any bad results.

I'm interested in hearing the reasons not to use it. I really enjoy tofu actually and like that it is easy and convenient to prepare...and I find that it allows for some variety. But always curious to learn.

It's controversial because it downregulates thyroid function.

I had estrogen driven breast cancer, and the Dr's said to avoid soy now. I am not exactly sure of what the science behind it is, but there is some estrogen-soy connection.

I have it maybe 1-2x a month in miso. Other than that, I avoid it.

I'm a vegetarian (near vegan, actually... but I eat local free-range eggs and some whey). I do eat soy. I have a thyroid problem, too, (hypo) so my doctor and I monitor things closely since I do eat plenty of soy. So far so good. No issues or changes. I do have whey protein, too, though. I like cooking with soy protein because it has a good texture and is flour-like.

That said, I have about 25g soy protein daily on most days, but none of some days. I get almost all of my protein from soy, whey, and eggs. I only get about 100-120g protein most days, but I have honestly seen no changes from when I was eating 175g a day. I added in more good fats where I had extra protein before.

Soy is estrogenic so if you have estrogen related issues, it may be good to stay away from it.

I have read that things like DIM and Indole 3 Carbinol may help though as it helps to regulate/balance the hormones and is anti-cancerous. You may want to read more about DIM and I3C

I think the anti-soy movement was mostly whipped up by fitness companies trying to sell their milk-based protein powders.

Rumbach, I agree. Everything in moderation. Japanese women eat tons of it and they have very low cancer rates and very long life spans. And for all the evidence against it there is just as much for it and vice versa. Until there is an absolute definitive answer I treat it as any supplement: with moderation and care.

I used to stay away from it entirely, but when I became a vegetarian I incorporated it back in and no changes whatsoever in my body, estrogen levels, thyroid levels etc.

I've heard the difference between our consumption of soy and the consumption of soy in Asian cultures is that theirs is primarily unprocessed forms, whereas ours is generally processed/modified quite a bit.

Though I don't know how much truth there is to that, and if you're at least monitoring for potential problems then I think that is a lot better than a lot of people who consume tons of it each day blindly.

I guess it's like pretty much everything else in life...all things in moderation, blah blah blah.

Im a vegetarian and have been one for years and I eat a ton of soy. Like Pandora, most my protein comes from soy, whey, and eggs, plus i eat dairy like yogurt and cheese.

You can find a ton of arguments in favor of or opposing soy, depending on which stance you want to defend. Personally, I believe that a lot of the anti-soy research has been fueled/funded by the meat/dairy/egg industry to try to regain consumers they lost to the "health trend". Some people shouldnt eat soy becasue theyr bodies react badly to the estrogen, just like some peoples digestive systems react badly to meat. I think its just an issue of knowing your body.

Soy is estrogenic so if you have estrogen related issues, it may be good to stay away from it.

Soy, like most plants, contain phytoestrogens.

However, not all soy products contain these

I was a vegetarian for about 11 years, and I got so used to eating soy products that they still taste pretty good to me. Not like meat, but good in their own weird way. :funny:

I don't think I eat any soy products now. I just don't have the need for them.

Same here!
Also, on the whole topic of plant estrogens interacting with human (female)estrogen/hormones, it's very unfounded and there is no basis that plant estrogens have any effect on human estrogen.

Bah on soy. Either it tastes like crap, or it tastes so good I can't stop eating it.

(I was vegan for awhile, so I got pretty sick of soy products in general.)

I'm vegetarian, and I probably consume about 0-8 grams of soy protein a day, I used to eat an absolute ton, but most of it is sooo processed and unhealthy seeming that I don't eat it now, don't really have anything against it, back when I ate a lot I never "felt" any different then now... For protein I eat: egg whites, protein powder, cottage cheese, seitan(a wheat protein).

I don't like how things with soy taste.

oh yea, forget about that...i do get a decent amount of protein from wheat gluten...many processed "fake meat" foods are a mixture of soy proteins and gluten too.

No, because when I compared the label of my ff milk to the ff soy milk, there was more protein in my ff milk than in the soy for the same amount of calories.

Oh yeah, and plus my ff milk doesn't taste like a foot.
