Starting Strength (http://www.startingstrength.com/)

The best descriptions of the squat, deadlift, bench press, standing shoulder press, and power clean and general training for a novice lifter. Just about all levels of lifters will at the very least be made to think by this book if not learn something. Excellent coaching tips for each lift.

When paired with Practical Programming (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0976805413/ref=wl_it_dp/103-2361048-2616601?%5Fencoding=UTF8&colid=XVMR912X7JAV&coliid=I2A6QS4NSO0H0U&v=glance&n=283155) (to be released August 30th), most will never need another book on training. Ever.

Doggcrapp training. The principles behind it aren't new or revolutionary. It is just one of many permutations of non retarded training. It's good to see that there are still some bodybuilding centered sites that aren't full of voodoo bullshit.

I love Lyle McDonald -- each of his books are thoroughly researched and referenced, like a true geek.

Another good read, regarding the mental aspects of training:

Iron Minds by Randall J Strossen (http://www6.mailordercentral.com/ironmind/prodinfo.asp?number=1305)

there's another one called Winning Ways: How to Succeed in the Gym and Out (http://www6.mailordercentral.com/ironmind/prodinfo.asp?number=1288), but I haven't got to it yet.
