I get a bladder infection!!!

Obviously sarcastic here. ;) I have not been peeing after sex (like I always have) since I kept reading/hearing that you should lie down for 20 mins and prop up your hips to allow the semen to get where it's supposed to be. Well after 20 mins, I keep falling asleep and don't pee again until morning.

Well, lying still didn't get me pregnant this month and now I have to go 7 whole darn days without sex at all, drink cranberry juice and suffer through the burning agony of a UTI when I pee every hour.

Grrrrrrr.

I have heard that you should pee afterwards to not get a bladder infection.
Why exactly is that?
I do mostly, but sometimes I am way too tired and pass out....

this is what the doc told me when I got a bad bladder infection in college (turned into a kidney infection and those can be fatal)

Always pee after sex because sex often pushes bacteria from your anal area into the vaginal area, where sometimes it travels up into the urethra. I guess if it gets into the vagina, it's usually dealt with pretty well by the body's defense system, but the urethra/bladder/kidneys are not that good at it. Peeing after sex helps move the bacteria right back out before it settle in and can do any damage. This is true even if you are a very clean person- it doesn't mean you didn't wipe well enough after going #2 or anything like that. It's just that girls are built stupidly- our butt and our female business are just way to close together. And our urethras are shorter than guys', making it easier for bacteria to get to a place where it can cause trouble.

I HIGHLY reccomend peeing 100% of the time after sex. It is better than the sheer hell I am in right now. I pee every 20 mins, it feels like I am being stabbed in the stomach when I finish and I am even peeing blood.

Sorry if TMI.

If you are urinating blood you need to see your doctor..that is normally signs of a kidney infection..

thanks- my dad is a doc and he is aware of the prob and also what antibiotics I am on. I appreciate the concern though. :)

also see this:

http://www.emedicinehealth.com/blood_in_the_urine/page2_em.htm

it can be when the infection is in the bladder as well- not all the way up in the kidneys yet.

Hey Colo, sorry about your unpleasant surprise. I used to get bladder/kidney infections about 4-5 times year and they suck big time.

Have fun baby making once you're good to go.

thanks tenacious-

any idea how many days until we can have sex? The nurse didn't tell me. I would hate to miss my ovulation this month, but also don't want to make it worse.

I am on the meds for 7 days, so I am assuming that length of time. But some websites are saying 10 days to 2 weeks. Just curious how long your doc said to wait.

I was told until the antibiotics were done. I know the pain usually goes away within 2 days, I think it's more of a percausionary measure than anything.

thx for the replies everyone. The antibiotics must be good, strong ones bc it already doesn't hurt to pee anymore. But I know to keep taking the pills. :)

I had the same problem. I started taking a cranberry extract pill when we were TTC to combat the problem. I think I only got one while we were trying. I too AWALYS get up to pee after normally.

Sorry.

It is good that the drugs are working fast. I would also say that as long as you are comfy - don't miss your Ovulation window becuase of this.

Yeah, hopefully I will be totally comfy in a few days and we can keep trying. It's only day #8 of my cycle right now.

I also did some research on the antibiotic I am on and it's only reccomended that women in their 3rd trimester don't take it, so if we conceived on my last day of the pills or something like that it sounds like it wouldn't be cause for worry.

WOW, I didn't realize that, I always have to go pee after sex and didn't realize it was actually a good thing for not getting infections! Sorry to hear you had to go through that pain but I'm glad to hear the medication is working:clap:
My sister used to get infections all the time, luckily I have never had one and after hearing how much they hurt I really hope I never do!

Here's a suggestion for TTC and NOT getting a bladder infection....

Get yourself a menstrual cup. They are available as a reusable rubber one like 'The Keeper' (sold online or in health stores), or the disposable ones like Instead that are sold in drugstores. These are designed to contain menstrual flow, and emptied when they are full. An environmentally friendly/odor free/comfortable alternative to pads/tampons.
ANYWAYS... my point is that many TTC women adapt these for the purpose of holding semen in. Immediately after sex, while still lying on your back, insert the cup (it's quite easy, practice makes perfect). Once inserted properly, it will hold the semen in a nice little pocket around your cervix, and you can get up and walk around without worrying about all that valuable goop leaking out. After about a 1/2 hour or more, take the cup out.

A cervical cap or diaphragm is NOT the same thing, and can't be substituted.

May sound gross - but it's very comfortable, and easy to use. And when TTC, nothing is gross anymore.

Hi - can you tell me why a cervical cap is not the same thing? I ask because when I had IUI, they inserted a cervical cap for the same reason (keep semen from leaking). Thanks.

The way it was explained to me is that a cervical cap is specifically designed to fit snugly over the top of the cervix. In theory this would seem fine, but after ejaculation there is sperm EVERYWHERE inside there, and most of it pools at the base of the vagina, sort of below the cervix. The wider menstrual cups , as they go in, 'scoop' the semen up into the cup, and contains the entire area - pooled semen and all. I was told that yes, a cervical cap surrounds the cervix, but since it goes in more 'rigid', it will likely contain less semen than the bigger cup would.

I guess since all it takes is one spermy, your chances are probably just as good with a cap - but since I'm now a bitter old hag who's been TTC for over 49 cycles.... just seems like if you can hold more of it in - why not?

I'm not trying for kids any time soon, but I'll definetly keep this infor for years down the road.

Oh, and the peeing thing.... I'll make sure to go after sex now (sometimes i do, sometimes I don't).
