What is the best way to do Standing Calf Raises? We don't have a machine for this at our gym...so, should I do them in the squat rack? Also do I do them straight from the ground or should I stand on an elevated surface to do them so that I can really stretch out at the bottom?

Use the leg press.
This is the only time I get in the Smith machine. I grab an aerobics step, position it beneath the bar, and do them there.
Your greatest challenge isn't someone else. It's the aching in your lungs, the burning in your legs and the voice inside that yells Can't. Don't listen. Push harder and hear the voice that yells CAN. You then realize that the person you thought you were is no match for the one you really are.
Totally unrelated... but I love your sig!!

I don't know if I do them right but I stand on the edge of an aerobics bench and use dumbbells....

This is what I tried to do - it just felt awkward. I then tried them in the squat rack and just couldn't stabilize myself properly. I could try dumbells as Christielou suggested but I would need straps to get enough weight.

Or you could use the leg press which allows you to pile on as much weight as you want without going to the trouble.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks.

I always use the leg press, I prefer it over the standing calf raise machine in my gym anyway, there isn't enough weight.
