Torn ligamnets...what to do?

My husband tore the ligamnet in his wrist. He knows hes not supposed to use it, but what can he do to speed recovery? We are using an inflammatory gel, on it, but should he use ice, or heat?

From what I remember alternate heat ice therapy is sometimes effective in the first 48 hours but after that ice and rest are best!
