Hi everyone,

This is one of my first posts on this board, however I've been reading this forums for a few months now. You're all extremely educated on weight training, so I had a question I needed somebody to answer.

I'm a 16 year old female and have been weight training since about March of 2006. I love it and take it pretty seriously. Right now, I'm following Thunder's 3 day full body routine(I really like it, by the way)

Anyways, grade 11 has just started for me, and obviously this will mess up my daily schedule a bit. I'm going to have to switch some of my workouts to different times of the day to be able to fit them in. I have a spare class first period in the morning, so I was thinking I would eat breakfast and then go to the gym to do my workout. It would be around 9:30 am by the time I'm done my workout, and obviously too early to eat lunch. I know the importance of eating a high protein meal after every workout and so I'm wondering if it would be a good idea for me to purchase some protein powder to take after my workouts in the morning? I also have a few more questions:

-At my local Wal-Mart, they sell whey protein powder. There are a few different brands to choose from. I'm particularly interested in one brand, which is PV Whey Protein in a Raspberry Cranberry flavor. It has 80 calories per serving and 20 grams of protein per scoop. Would this be a good choice?

I'm thinking I will buy this one, because it's pretty low calorie. I'm kind of concerned with adding extra calories, as stupid as that sounds, because I already take in a LOT of calories for somebody my age. I know you need extra calories to promote muscle growth and to prevent muscle breakdown, but I'm just wondering if adding protein powder on the mornings that I train would be a good idea?
I'm thinking I'll purchase the one I mentioned above, because it's the cheapest, and I'm not sure how I'll like it, so I obviously don't want to spend $40.00 on protein powder if I end up hating it! lol.

So if I happened to purchase this protein powder, would one scoop be enough after my workout(20 grams of protein), to last me the 2 hours until lunch? Or would I need more than 20 grams of protein?

Obviously, as you can probably tell from my message, I'm very confused about this and would appreciate any help you had to offer! Thank you! It's much appreciated. :)

20g should be fine...but have carbs then, too. Rice cakes are convenient :)
Post workout is the last time to be concerned about consuming calories...get proper nutrition.

:puke:

When I travel I always have my favorite PWO (on my company card), BK Double Cheeseburger washed down with Muscle Milke.

mmmm mmmm good.

The chocolate chip rice cakes are pretty yummy. And there's some cinnamon toast flavour that's pretty good, too. But I usually have kiddie cereal...it's still easy and cheaper.

Your PWO meal...hmm...I think she'd run screaming if she saw the calorie count :funny:

Thanks for the reply, Jaleena. I know post workout should be the time where I'm least concerned with calories, but it's just a silly, irrational fear of mine, because I used to deal with some eating problems in the past. I'm far past that now, but I still get the odd fear from time to time.

On a side note, do you think the protein powder I'm planning on buying sounds like it would taste good? lol, it's Raspberry cranberry, so I'm guessing it will taste like fruit juice or something of the sort..

And let me get this straight:

-Breakfast

-Lifting

-After lifting, protein powder, plus some form of carb

-Approx.1.5-2 hrs later, lunch(which would most likely be a tuna or salmon sandwich). Sound good? Or....?

Timing sounds good :)

As far as how the powder will taste...it's pretty individual. Some brand has stuff called "whey coolers" that's pretty popular, so it sounds like what you're looking at has potential. I've always gone for the more dessert-like flavours, though. See if a local supplement store will mix you a sample of a few things...that way you'll know if you like it, first. Also, some groceries have really good return policies where you can take it back if you don't like it...see if your WalMart does, or if there's something worth trying at a store that has that policy.

That's a good idea. I live in a pretty small town, so I don't think we have a supplement store, but I could look into it. As far as I know, protein powders are only sold at local places like Wal-Mart, grocery stores, drug stores, etc.

I think I would like the dessert flavors more too(chocolate, to be more specific..lol). One chocolate protein powder I saw at the grocery store had 70 calories a scoop, but only 16 grams of protein. Would I just have to add a bit more to each scoop to increase the protein content? (I'm assuming I would need more than 16 grams of protein after a workout..?)

Thanks for all the help so far! I really appreciate it.

Yeah, just adjust the serving size to have the protein you need :)
Some powders have 50g in a serving...if you want one of those, just use half, that kind of thing.

My WalMart has a chocolate one by EAS (no-frills type) It tastes pretty good, better than ON chocolate and it's about 15.00 here. I still get a little bloated from it (I do from most protein powders) but I only use it PWO so I can manage it.

I'd give you the nutrient breakdown but my son tore the label off.

i just bought some of the type that is sold at Walmart..Body Force or something to that effect. I bought the chocolate, it's cheap, tastes pretty good..but be prepared that it doesn't mix very well. If you mix it up ahead of time and stick it back in the fridge, that gives it time to dissolve and then it's fine.

I prefer Jay Robb brand but can't find it locally yet.

Biotest has a several flavors of protein powder (orange, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, banana creme), all of which taste pretty good. 20g of protein per serving, 110 cals, and it's pretty cheap. Also available online, so you can order it from anywhere, and they have a money-back guarantee if you don't like the stuff. Go to http://www.t-nation.com/ and click on the store logo.

From your posts I'll bet that you're looking at what I just wrote and thinking "110 cals! No way!" Right? But believe me, those extra 30 cals three times a week aren't going to make any difference at all. (If you're really really worried about it, take the extra cals out from somewhere else in your diet - like a day that you're not training - and everything will balance out nicely. :) )

Thanks. You read my mind-that's exactly what I was thinking..lol. But it's nice to be reassured that those extra calories won't make a difference in my weight. It's just an irrational 'fear' of mine..silly, I know. I ended up buying the cheapest protein powder they had at Wal-Mart just to try, since I didn't want to end up spending $40.00 on a tub of PP and find out I absoloutely hate it! lol. So I'll have it tomorrow after my workout.
