Does anyone cleanse?
A couple of years ago I did a 2 week cleanse (wild rose) with which I felt really good after. I have been wanting to try another one to help get back on track and hopefully help with my results before starting a new program. (season change, kids back to school etc. feels like a need for change) I was on the fence between a 12 day one and a 30 day one. The "guy" at GNC recommended a 30 day one as he said I could continue to eat normally as long as it was clean you just take two pills in the morning and two before bed. He also said this would allow me to continue to work out and eat protein since some restrict your diet so much that you don't have the energy to lift. Any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this has been discussed before.

A cleanse is a way to rid your body of toxins, parasites yeasts etc through the liver and intestines. Some people do cleanses a few times a year, some just once. People who have done cleanses say you are left with more energy, less headaches, less symptoms associated with illnesses. It's fairly new to me but it was advised a few years ago once I changed my diet and started working out. I lost about 5 lbs while doing it but let me tell you, I always had to make sure a washroom was close by. I told my husband that it was actually a unique feeling to feel your bowels completely empty. Literally, you eat something and a couple of hours later it leaves your body. You don't realize how much "junk" is in your system. I was just curious what others thought of it.

I think that's what your entire digestive system is there for. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. JMO.

But how do you know if it "ain't broke"? People who recommend cleanses say you should be having 2-3 bowel movements a day. I thought I was normal with one. Apparantly not. With all the chemicals we ingest in a day...metals from cans, pesticides from fruit etc. if you could rid yourself from toxins, things that the normal digestive system can't, wouldn't it make sense.

Who are these "people"? I've read from "people" that it's normal to have only 1-3 bowel movements a week. Who do I believe?
Provide me w/evidence, and I might recommend taking a few pills a day so I could shit up a storm. As it is, I'm perfectly happy with my current bathroom schedule.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger, I was looking for opinions and advice, I'm not trying to sell you on cleansing products.
I found this article.
Why Cleanse the Bowel ?
A good cleansing program should always begin by removing the waste in your colon, the last portion of your food processing chain. If you attempt to clean your liver, blood, or lymph system without first addressing a waste filled bowel, the excreted toxins will only get recycled back into your body.
One of the most frequent bowel problems that people experience today is constipation. Constipation is generally attributed to a low fiber diet and lack of sufficient water, which cause our fecal matter to become condensed and compressed.
A constipated system is one in which the transition, or "time", of toxic wastes is slow and the consistency of the stool can cause strain (which over time may cause hemorrhoids, varicose veins, hiatal hernia, or other mechanically induced problems). The longer the "transit time", the longer the toxic waste matter sits in our bowel which allows proteins to putrefy, fats to rancify, and carbohydrates to ferment.
The longer your body is exposed to putrefying food in your intestines, the greater the risk of developing disease. Even with one bowel movement per day, you will still have at least three meals worth of waste matter putrefying in your colon at all times. On top of all this, your system can also become continuously self-polluting by the poisonous gases that are caused by foods you don't tolerate. These poisonous gases can enter your bloodstream, irritating your organs and joints.
Alternating between constipation and diarrhea, or diarrhea alone, are also indications of foul matter in your intestines. And finally, the much more serious problems of cancer and immune system dysfunctions begin with a toxic bowel.
The long held belief of some health professionals is that many people just have fewer bowel movements than others. This is true, but they also neglected to inform these individuals that those having fewer bowel movements are harboring a fertile breeding ground for serious diseases and possibly death. Infrequent or poor quality bowel movements over an extended period of time are very hazardous to your health.
Once we truly understand the "single greatest challenge our body faces is the effective removal of wastes and toxins ", we will never again undermine the importance of frequent, high quality, bowel movements.
Gastroenterologist, Dr. Anthony Bassler, tells his colleagues, "Every physician should realize that the intestinal toxemias (poisons) are the most important primary and contributing causes of many disorders and the diseases of the human body."

ask the people to name the "toxins", not just generic enviromental garbage that gets absorbed quite nicely

I'm a firm believer in the body cleansing itself. I do have 3 Bm's a day so I am lucky in that respect. Mind you, luck is not the only factor. I have a diet where my bowels can move that many times a day.
I think bowel cleansing is dangerous if done all the time. Once a year, ok fine. Get the toxins out, but to make this a habit is not safe. The body will become dependent on removing toxics only by way of a cleanse.
The body wants to expel toxins. That is like saying it's good to douche all the time to remove yeast and bacteria. As all of us women know, douching is unsafe and actually promotes growth of bad bacteria since a douche washes away the good bacteria.
Colon cleanses are recommended by co's that sell colon cleanings products and my colonic providers.
Let the body do it's work naturally

I'm with you, I don't think they are good ideas b/c the body (unless there's a problem) is a very efficient machine. Of course you'll lose some weight but its most likely water weight, IMO. Most of the colony cleansing ads are just a hype.

Flora can be quickly replaced with asodopholis (bifidus), even so, colon cleanses are still not safe.

Personally I think the entire concept of a "cleanse" for a healthy adult human being is just ridiculous.
Your body is self "cleansing" if you treat it right.
And some of this stuff is actually dangerous.
I say, if it ain't broke, don't do something stupid in an attempt to fix it... jmho...

You know what is stupid though on a side note? About 10 people at my work (I work at a hospital to boot) are on a 9 day cleanse because someone lost alot of weight on it. You eat shakes and take snack tablets for 9 days and I beleive allow 1 meal a day. How can you do this and still have the energy to make it through the day? None of these people workout and all are overweight. Is it just the search for the easy way out? I wasn't interested in doing a cleanse for weight loss, I just thought it went hand in hand with a season change and ridding the body of toxins. Also the cleanse I was interested in was $25 for 30 days, there's is $120-170 for 9 days and you get a discount if you pay $36 and sign people up to also purchase products!!!!!!!!

I will tell you that I know a few people who have lost weight by following a "diet" similar to the one you describe...and then they gained it all back PLUS some. It's really not worth it, if you ask me...if you don't have digestive problems, then your body is doing its job. And if you do have digestive problems, you need to seek medical attention instead of relying on a pill or a fad cleanse.

My friend's father use to do cleanses 1 to 3 times a year with products he got from Switzerland. He'd apparently lose about 20 lbs each time. He swore by it. I hate to say this though, he died of colon cancer at age 60. His family always hated when he went on those cleansing diets....they use to tell him that they weren't healthy. Now, I'm not saying that it was the cleansing diets that caused his cancer - but they certainly did not help preventing it, that's for sure.

I think a cleanse can mean many things to many people. On some of them you don't eat anything, some are fruit juice only, some are clean foods...point being they are all very diverse. Personally, I think setting strict guidelines for what food you are going to eat, avoiding eat meals, sugar and artifical sweetner, adding extra fibre and calling it a cleanse can be a mentally and physically great thing to do before starting a new exercise and diet regime.
That's my 2 cents anyway.

Well, after I started this thread, I did decide to go on Cleanse Smart. It is a 30 day cleanse where you take take two pills in the morning to help cleanse your liver, and two in the evening (before bed on an empty stomach) to cleanse your colon. I feel great. It has only been 2 weeks, but so far I feel great. Or I should say I don't feel bad. On another cleanse I tried two years ago, I was in a lot of discomfort and was always in the washroom, and really had to restrict my diet. With this one I am very regular (which has been a bonus since I did have issues in that department before despite following a healthy diet) And I can eat what I want (again, I normally eat healthy anyway) I was told that some cleanses restrict your diet and protein consumption so much that working out is out of the question, with this one my routine has stayed the same. I beleive it is all natural products too so that is a bonus.
