View Full Version : Details of Detraining

Just curious what exactly detraining entails, like...

- What period of time should you stop training? And do you stop or just do less volume?

- During this period, do you stop all training, or do you continue cardio?

- How often should you detrain?

- How much strength should you expect to lose after the detraining period?

Nice GOLF team on ya!!

Some of us in Canada like to cheer for hockey teams, but you know, if you can find people who play golf for long enough in the summer, you just mught have someone worth cheering for. Unfortunately for me, my favourite golfers won't have time to get out on the green until, oh, late June, so they'll be a bit behind your fav players....Oh well, I guess I'll settle for hockey for now...

basically there is a time to drop the volume (under-reaching) and keep the intensity high and in others drop the volume and intensity as well (unloading).

There is probably a general/generic percentage written somewhere in some book that says how much you should decrease the workload on the under-reaching/underloading week(s). But in simplest terms, just drop the workload. if you have been training 4 days a week for 3 weeks, in the fourth week cut back to only 2 or three times a week (once every 2-3 days) and maintain your intensity.

A basic example of this could be ramping up your volume over 3 weeks, week 4 maintaining the intensity but cutting the volume and then weeks 5-7 keeping the volume at that lower level (under-reaching) and then increasing the intensity. Week 8 you can unload and drop the volume and instenisty and give your body a break. I think somewhere in Supertraining, Siff says something like your body can handle two 4 week rounds of over-reaching/under-reaching (acumulation/intensification) before it needs to take a longer break.

In general, in the over-reaching phase you are purposefully going to try and push yourself into a fatigued state. the greater the amount of fatigue your get, the longer you will need to "back off" for. Typically, you don't want to over-reach more then a 10% reduction in performance as you will start to push yourself into more of an over-trained state.

Thanks p-funk! My internet went down and I couldn't get back to controll the debauchery.

I wasn't sure what it was called. I was just wondering if training stopped completely or if volume just decreased. Would you continue with cardio or not?

Go check my journal for a "freestyle" example of it.

I'm not exactly counting reps or anything of that sort, just gradually ramping up the weight and volume, going in and beating the hell out of myself for a week, then backing off the volume/frequency while keeping the weight kinda heavy.

Like anything, it's only as complicated as you want it to be.
