When doing a push press with DBs or BB, do your feet leave the ground? Yesterday I tried them and I didn't jump, I just bent my knees. My trainer's exercise directory doesn't say to jump, but the videos I see online all have a little jump.

Not necessarily no.

Thanks. So the knees fully extend before the bar gets completely overhead, correct?

Does this exercise just take practice. It feels plain weird to me.

yah it does. do you have someone at the gym, a trainer, etc to help show you the proper form?

& to answer question, my feet stay flat on floor.

:lol3:

Like most trainers would know what it is.

I end up going up on my toes. I don't see how one could get leg drive if their entire foot was planted flat on the floor.

my feet never come of the floor? perhaps my heel slightly elevates in the pushing movement but minimal amounts.

and hey, you never know. we have a trainer here that has his master in EX science and is a strength training coach... I guess it depends on the gym. :shhh: i should have noted that.

Nope.
I'd say if you actually leave the ground a bit, you can be sure that you're getting some explosive leg drive.

I don't do these...well I did once.I was so explosive that I fell over front wise and bout took out everyone within 5 feet of me trying to get away from the weight as it fell to the ground..Something about pushing that weight over my head makes me nervous.

Yeah tell me about it. The trainers at my gym = :pimpslap: .

I *heart* the push press though. I am seriously the ONLY person in my gym who does it. I have never seen anyone else do it ever. I do a bit of a jump too, feet not off the ground by much.

Don't ask your trainers about push presses. They'll think you're trying to seduce them.

Tippy toes here too. One of my favorites. I'm definitely the only one that does them at my gym, but I'm usually the only one near the free weights at all. (unless they're pink)

I don't think it really matters much one way or the other whether your feet actually come up off the ground or not. My take on the push press is that it's a military press with some extra leg drive added. How much is pretty much up to you, so long as you use enough to make it possible for yourself to put more weight on the bar than you do for a Mil Press.

The more you drive with your legs, and especially if you come up off the ground, the closer you are to actually performing a jerk. It's not exactly the same, but you see what I mean.

How so?

The jerk is completely explosive, whereas I view a push press as only being somewhat explosive. Thus, the more explosion you use...

I know that there are also technique differences, like coming under the bar for a jerk. Just talking about the explosiveness aspect.

I know that when the weight gets heavier, I start pushing more with my legs, but that doesnt take away from the press out. With equal leg drive, the difference between a jerk and PP is that I drop under the former to avoid pressing out.

I can say that with metal plates, push presses get scary after 250 for me so Ill start jerking after that
