View Full Version : Questions....
I have a few questions to ask you girls. I have been reading as much info as I can, but one book says 'yes it's okay' and the next says 'no it's not'....so maybe you can help? I'm getting confused!
1) Is too much protien bad for the baby? I tend to eat a lot of egg whites, chicken, cottage cheese etc & get about 148g/day. I'm wondering if I should cut back & substitute some of the protein for carbs?
2) Is it okay to use self tanning lotions? Hair spray/products? Cleaning supplies...ie. Pledge, bleach etc...?
3) Since you're not supposed to raise your body core temp too high...is it okay to use a hot water bottle etc. on your stomach if you're having cramps? Or will that make the embryo/fetus too hot?
Think that's all for now...but I'm sure I'll be adding to this list...

as always, ask your doc, but here's my two cents:
1. If you are on a low carb diet, I have heard it's not great for baby. Something about carbs being needed for brain development of the baby. Besides, if you do start getting morning sickness, you won't want to eat ANY protein and carbs will be all that sounds good.
2. I'm sure all that stuff is fine, just keep the room very well ventilated when you're using it.
3. I would say no on the hot water bottle. I have heard you're not supposed to be in hot tubs or even hot baths, as it raised your temp, so I would guess the hot water bottle directly on the area the baby is would be the same deal, if not worse since it's so direct on the area. Tylenol is fine during pg, so I would ask your doc if she'll let you take that for cramps.
Good luck!

Here's my take, FWIW:
1. I'd cut back on protein some, if it were me. Is that intake you mention 1.5XBW? The baby does need carbs, (probably a bit more than what most fitness minded folks eat?) and I wouldn't see adding in carbs without cutting back on protein. (Since you really don't need more than an extra 300 cal/day, and maybe not even that much in the beginning) JMHO
2. Some of this is your own personal comfort level. When I was pg I used self tanning cream on my legs (so as not to scare everyone with my ghostly whiteness since I was always pg in summer). Hair stuff should be fine, hair color - some do/some don't.
Cleaning products - I'd steer clear from the strong stuff as much as possible. Think of it as an excuse to have DH help with the cleaning, or switch to some milder products.
3. I agree with Colo, say no to hot water bottles.

I cut my protein down to 1 x lb... still higher than most texts recommend (I couldn't stomach the 60 g/day in 'What to Expect'.... what is that, like 1 egg? I don't even know anymore. Too small of a number for me to compute.)
Also read somewhere that the active ingredient in self tanners (name of chemical is elluding me right now) is safe.... good to know, cause I've been slathering alot. However, since most tanners come packaged with other chemical crap, I stilll have lingering doubts in the back of my mind.
I figure it's still a hell of a lot better than crack cocaine....
No to hot water bottles. Those heated thingies that you can buy and place on your tummy for cramps (looks like a bandage? Therm...something? I can picture the package in my head....) seem to be okay as they don't really get very hot....
