View Full Version : Decline bench press
When doing a decline bench press with dumbells, what is the best way to put the dumbells down when you are done your set? The weight I use is to heavy for me to "sit up" with on the bench but I am afraid of tearing my shoulders out by dropping the dumbells on the floor. Any suggestions?

Usually, I just throw them and grunt really loud....
Just kidding.
Ummm, way that I do it is bend my elbow and slowly lower both shoulders down, then slowly extend my elbows one at a time and gently place them on the floor....
A spotter might help...:)

meh. It's one of those exercises I haven't found to be a "money" exercise, so I generally stick to other things.
I could see myself using it on occasion, on one of those "oh what the hell?" days I have.

To me it's pretty much the same as flat benching.

I'm not very graceful. I'm pretty much at risk of falling on my head, no matter what I'm doing.

so T and PMDL, does it not really work the pec fibers in enough of a variation to make it worthwhile? I usually just vary bench press by raising the incline a bit.

Incline may be a different matter.
Decline, not so much. At least for me, anyway.

are you going by practical experience or textbook? it sounds like you're coming from personal experience, which is all well and good with me, but I didn't know if you knew of any "research" on it.
I know incline hits a lot of anterior delt as well as pec, so does someone claim that decline hits something else?

A little of both really. Pec recruitment isn't any higher on a decline, not enough to make a difference.
Inclines, I've seen some both ways....anecdote seems to imply some utility for those, but the science not so much.

I'd always heard that decline takes more of the anterior delt out of the movement and more fully stresses the pecs. Not sure where I read that.
