Ok, so I was just talking to my supervisor about working out and he heard that research has come out stating that Squats and Deadlifts aren't good for you (something to do with the last few vertebraes in your back).

Anyone heard anything about this? I hope it's not true, I really lvoe my squats (and just started doing deadlifts). :(

anything is bad for you if you do it improperly.

just walking can be bad for you if your gait is off.

Post the studies that he was refering to.

We would have to see the research to comment on it, but squatting and deadlifting will improve the quality of most of our lives. For most of us, the benefits will outweigh the risks. Remember that being born is also "bad for you", as the mortality rate is 100%. :lol3:

I agree everything in life is "bad for you". Don't let you boss ruin your fun. My mother shattered her ankle just getting out of the car.

Sorry about the spelling mistakes, I don't normally make that many mistakes.

I'll ask where he heard this exactly and see if there's a link online.

I was just thinking it would be bad if your form was off.

I had a former powerlifter come up and lecture me about deadlifts the other day. He saw me loading up the bar and asked what I was doing. Told me not to lift that heavy (I was only doing 145 forgawdsakes) because he hurt his back lifting heavy and had to have major surgery. While I feel terrible for him, I am not going to stop lifting heavy or doing dls and squats.

Oh! I should probably knock on wood for saying this, but I used to have a knee problem...and ever since I have been squatting ATG my knee has not bothered me. I swear the squatting has strengthened my knees. :)

Sometimes I wonder about some of the people who call themselves powerlifters...

I am going to find out his name next time I see him. He said he was "nationally ranked". He's HUGE.

There are so many feds that somebody could be nationally ranked without being worth anything...just depends on if they lifted in some random little fed so they could get their record, or if they went with a big one with actual competition. And size doesn't mean much...

The people around me are very different, anyhow...a couple weeks ago my partner and I were messing around doing high volume, short RI stuff, and I was using 185 for deads...somebody else walked by and chewed me out for using that for anything but a warmup, as he thinks I can overhead press that

That's why I want to find out his name. The guy I am seeing is a pl'er and he told me to find out the guy's name...said if he's legit he'll probably know who he is. The guy I'm seeing had surgery several months ago...shoulder, hurt himself deadlifting (someone distracted him and messed up his form) and he still says "lift heavy!" So yeah, I am suspicious of the guy at the gym. Maybe he is just down on lifting heavy 'cause he got hurt, who knows...

Nah, everybody gets hurt. And the better they are, the more they get hurt, so...
