I assume we are talking about regular self-tanners, and not comp tanners, correct?
Ok, then in that case I am in love with Loreal Sublime Bronze. That is after alot of trial and error. But I won't say it's perfect. It comes in a bronzer (med or dark) and a gel. The bronzer stains clothes pretty bad, don't even think about wearing white if you plan on sweating with it on. I've changed my gym clothing to all black for that reason.
But even with all that, it's the one I use. It doesn't have that nasty stink that some tanners do, and it is a nice natural brown, not an orangy color at all. It's like $18 CAN a bottle, but you don't need much, and I've calculated I spend less on self-tanners than I did last year on tanning minutes, and I don't have to worry about cancers.
Tried Tan Towels - way too expensive, need at least 2 to do a decent job, and most of the towelettes are pretty dry feeling.
On my face I use neutrogena's Build-A-Tan cream. I use it day and night as my moisturizer. It is white, so it doesn't stain anything, and is extremely natural looking. A bottle of that stuff lasts me 5 months or so - way cheaper than facial moisturizer.
I agree with Clsupnorth....Loreal Sublime boronzer rocks! I've been using it for a couple of years now & love the stuff!

are we talking about the fake n' bake kind? Cause I know alot of good kinds!
No...I'm not talking fake tanning lotions. I meant real tanning lotions that you use in a tanning bed.

I think a great tanning lotion is Dark Sexy Tan by Matahari, Pink Diamond by Swedish Beauty, also Almost Famous by AG is good too. There is a tanning salon here (Hamilton) that sells lotions up to 30.00 - 40.00 bucks cheaper than other salons here. But try a few and see what you like. I would think anything with bronzers would be good if you want quick colour.

I agree anything with a bronzer is good really, but then again I tend to tan really easy, how well do you tan?

I am all about Spellbound or anything by Matahari like Dark Sexy Tan.
But Spellbound is the shit.
I guess I've gotta expand my horizons and check out other places to buy it. I've only ever bought what's at my gym. I've never even heard of Matahari.
I bought one bottle that was like $80 and it SUCKED!

You got HOSED.
Spellbound is $40 (US) at my tanning place. And the other in the mid $30s. There are different levels on the Matahari stuff.

I am queen of tanning....I do have one in my house  . Also did work at a salon for a short spell, so I got to try out a lot. I prefer Australian Gold and Swedish Beauty. Granted, you get what you pay for, the more expensive lotions are better than the less expensive. However, out of these 2 brands, there aren't crappy lotions. It's just a matter of how much you want to spend.
Check out ebay. I got a $90 bottle (according to MSRP) for $30 brand new, sealed, etc. from ebay. Also, if you like the burned feel - the tingle - or if you don't, that changes your options up a bit. Swedish Beauty does make stuff you can spray on after you use a tingle to take down the itch/burn sensation quite a bit.

There's actually a lot of science that goes in to it. The tingle does something with something to deepen the tan beyond what is your natural set point. Better moisturizers also keep your tan longer. Dry skin means you're flaking off tan skin, obviously. More advanced moisturizers cost more than the run of the mill ones. Most of the Swedish Beauty and Australian Gold lotions that are new tout new technology that locks in the tan so that the results last 7 days without additional tan. That means you need to tan less to get tan and to keep the tan.
I'm going to look into the science of tingle, I read a few scientific articles on the topic, but I don't remember much of anything. I just know from personal experience that nothing works quite like a lot of tingle. If I track down a good one, I'll post it up.
Bronzer is basically just sunless tanner, so I don't put a lot of stock in that. Some bronzers are more basic than that and only offer additional color up until you shower.
Hmmm...interesting...thanks Mandy :hi:

Leah, I can't find the articles on the tingle or anything, I just know it helps boost you over your tanning plateau somehow. It's that "somehow" that I can't remember and can't seem to find. I need my tanning consultant certfication book. Oo buddy, you bet I'm certified. I'm a CTC weeee  Seriously, in Ohio, you have to get certified to work at a tanning salon. I know there were articles in the book I read in order to take the certification test. Tingle is for more advanced tanners, not those in the beginning stages so much. It's not detrimental, just isn't really necessary.
Oh, products with hemp in them tend to make a lot of people itch or break out. Some poor girl swore she used normal moisturizer with hemp seed in it, she came out from a room with a rash all over her face. So, if you use a hemp-containing lotion, you may want to test it out before you even think about using it all over. I don't like walking around smelling like I was smoking up so I never used it.

That's so crazy, I just read this thread and my co-workers were just telling me about this product today. I saw it on my supervisor and it totally looked natural.

Australian Gold Idol. I am white as paper and using that got me tan. It doesn't have bronzers or tingle, it's just a really good tanning lotion. Tanning without it does not get me nearly as dark nor do I have nice, even colour.
Buy one of those little sample packs and give it a shot.

I like and regularly use:
Sub Zero in Chocolate Chip Mint (smells great...it's a chilled bronzer, instead of heating up it cools you down in the bed!)
and
Australian Gold Golden Tingling Glaze.
I bought both on eBay and they were much cheaper

 everybody has a set point in terms of how tan they can get naturally. You know how it's normal that red haired people generally don't tan too well? Definitely not like the tan that those with naturally dark hair and dark eyes. That's because each person has a set point of genes that determines how tan one can get.

May I ask a related question?
Do you know any good tanning products with sunscreen (SPF 15 or above)?
Or should I just pick a good color, and then apply sunscreen on top?

I'm no help in the sunscreen department. Don't use it, myself.

I think that's like dieting and bulking at the same time :p You might find a fake tanner w/ sunscreen...but I've never seen a tanning lotion w/ a sunscreen

I have been using designer skin brand. I love the worship and I have a hot one can not remeber the name. I think I got them for around 25 or 30 u.s. but have lasted me a long time. The worship has a bronzer in it and great lotions. Smells great too. I get really fast results and with the bronzer that is in it, you get a little color that looks natural while you are tanning. I ordered them online

i'm reviving this old thread. just spent an hour googling indoor tanning lotions trying to find an unbiased scientific source on whether or not i need to buy this bottle of expensive lotion that claims it has "20 bronzers" and "melanin activators". is it just a bunch of hype, or will a good moisturizer before tanning be fine? i prefer the stand-up beds so no one has to worry about chemicals reacting with the acrylic.

they sell all kinds of lotion in shops. Cant imagine you need 'that' one. You do need something. some of my natural/holistic practioner said they use coconut oil. Im not suggesting it, especially out some research. It would not be good for a ly down bed for sure.

googling, there are a lot of products with it and some natural ones as well FOR indoor tanning.

You don't need an uber-expensive tanning lotion. But if you are doing indoor tanning, I think you should use a product that is made specifically for that purpose... one that helps protect your skin. The "anti-aging" indoor tanning lotions may not actually be anti-aging but they do help protect your skin to a degree... much better than not using one.
Lotion Source has pretty good prices on some of their lotions. Even their highest priced lotions are much less than the same products in tanning salons. They have FREE shipping on purchases over $49. So you can stock up on tanning lotion and other moisturizers, cleansers, shampoo, etc to get the best deal.
